Vintage Postcard Ornaments

My very dear friend Traci runs the Amazing Mae blog. (btw, TODAY 12/30 is her birthday! Stop by her blog and wish her a happy birthday).  For a little while she has been "tinkering" with making soldered necklaces from vintage images. This fall she pronounced herself "open" for the business of soldering! I was sooooo excited.!!!

You see, my Mom has a big collection of vintage postcards from her Aunt & a few from my Dad's dad. She has framed some for my kids in the past but other than that, they are sitting in a box.  Last summer I talked her out of a few of them (she was really nice and let me take whatever I wanted).

My first thought was to have them made into charms for necklaces but I wanted more of the postcard to show... so instead of charms, Traci made ornaments for me.

She scanned the postcards then printed them out and turned them into soldered ornaments! The day she delivered them to me I looked at them and wanted to cry I was so excited!
I had her make some for my mom, brother, sister and sister in law.
Here are the ornaments, I am "coaxing" Traci into making more of the Valentines ones to sell in our etsy shoppe.. (that will be open one of these days, if I can get my act together).

The front, I attached some chandelier charms to the jump rings that she added to each one

The back, YEP that's a 1911 postmark.. pretty cool huh!?!?!

This one's my favorite, I don't know if you can read it, but it was written to my Grandpa when he was a kid.

and one last one... for Valentines day...

Well, she did not stop there... look what she made for me too!! She stole some photos off my blog and made little "travel postcard" ornaments for us! I love them so much! We have 2 trees, a Disney tree and a "fancy" tree. She said she made them for my Disney tree, but they are hanging on my fancy one instead.

Christmas Wrap Up!

*if you are visiting from Sew Mama Sew, click on sewing on the labels on the side bar for more sewing ideas.**
So am I a day late and a dollar short??  You know I have great intentions of getting photos of stuff taken then posted, then it doesn't happen...
oh--- if I could only follow through with all of my intentions... but such is life.

So here is one big 'ole Christmas wrap up post!  If you aren't too sick of looking at photos of tinsel, ornaments & greenery take a gander.

I made a new garland for my fireplace this year... I know I promised a tutorial... well I've got a similar idea for Valentines, so watch for a tutorial soon!

fireplace mantle, still working on the "wow" factor... I've got a few ideas for next year

my ornament wreath that Kathryn helped me make!

close up of a garland around my dining room chandelier

my candy table...still need a "wow" here too.. got a few ideas for next year

remember the spiders at Halloween?? Well for Christmas I hung giant candy ornaments above the bar in my kitchen.

THANK you to everyone that emailed me with ideas for neighbor gifts. Actually this year I was suffering from "idea overload" and could not commit to just one idea.... In the end, I went with an old standby, peppermint bark (I can post the recipe if you like).

I boxed it up, then to make a tag did the easiest thing ever! I just took a packing tag (from Office store) then covered the back only with pattern paper.(stole this idea from my Mom).  Then stamped the non covered side.  Easy Peasy... Took these around to the neighbors, including one that moved in only 2 weeks ago .. they were so excited, I'm glad I decided to add them to "the list" last second.

oh... this kept us really busy... Let's just say I'm not the only crafty one in the family :-)... Hubby built this for our daughter.  It took along time!!!! A lot of time that he could not be helping with the cleaning/child care etc... Thus... keeping us ALL really busy... but in the end it was totally worth it...

I mean look at her face when she saw it!!  It came from Dad, not Santa... Dad still has to finish the interior, but she can help him "decorate".

I managed to make a few crafty things done too.. they each got a lap quilt.. Here is Andrew's. Super super simple pattern. I'll post more info on these later. (they are backed with minke...super duper soft)

For the "specials" teachers (i.e. music, art etc).. I got these clipboards at Archivers for $1 then covered them with scrapbook paper and buttons, then clipped on a movie gift card on it.

The teacher gifts... (love the mess in the background?). Just a tin board and vinyl lettering. Then I attached some magnets to the back of some buttons, gems, & oversize paper clips.

Whew!! Now just to finish my 25 days of December album.. then I can check Christmas 2009 off my "list"..

Oh- one last tip? Do you have Holiday crafts that you don't finish??? I always do. I started putting the unfinished crafts in one bin in my craft room.  I've got stuff 1/2 way done for 4th of July & Halloween already... that way I don't forget about it.

Breakfast Christmas Morning

Do you need an idea for breakfast Chrismtas morning!??  I thought it would be a good time to repost a guest post I did for Mique at 30 days last month.

It's quick, easy, unique & delicious!

Most of my recipes come from my Mom, friends or my favorite cookbooks, but this one I came up with myself, and it took lots and lots of tries to get just right. After a few failed attempts and some burned dishes, I finally nailed it.

I had always struggled with what to feed my family for breakfast on Christmas day. I usually have intentions of making cinnamon rolls the night before, or waking up and making a super fancy meal. However, I always get too busy for the cinnamon rolls the night before, and I'm usually super tired Christmas morning (due to my kids waking me up every hour all night!).

One of our favorite restaurants is The Original Pancake house, they have this dish called the Dutch baby, it's to die for! We don't have a restaurant in town, so I've been trying to find a dish that is close.

This one is NOT the same as the restaurant but a close second. It's the combination of a few different recipes, then changed to be made individually.

The best part!?!? Well you make it in the blender, so there is little mess, and it bakes in less than 15 min! The hardest part is cutting up all the fruit.

You will need individual baking dishes, ramekins won't work, you need something with short sides, like mini pie plates or petite au gratin pans.
Individual Puff Pancakes -
Yield 4 small or 3 large pancakes (depends on the size of your dish).
I doubled this recipe and it gave me enough for 6 dishes, my dishes are pretty large.
Preheat oven to 425

In blender mix:
1/2 c all purpose flour
1/2 c whole or 2 % milk
2 eggs
3 T sugar
1/2 t vanilla
1 T fresh squeezed lemon juice
pinch of lemon zest
pinch of salt

Place 1 T of butter in each baking dish. Place dishes in the oven for about 10 minutes until the butter melts and the dishes are hot.

Without removing the dishes from the oven, pour batter into each baking dish about 1/2" deep. Do not stir and mix in the butter. (just evenly divide your batter among your dishes).

Close oven and cook for 10 min. Check. Cook additional time if necessary. They go from done to burned fast.. so watch them.

The pancakes are done when they are lightly golden brown and puffed. (see photo). Serve immediately.

Serve with: (this is the important part!)
fresh sliced strawberries
fresh sliced bananas
sifted powdered sugar
strawberry syrup
whip cream.

The Twilight before Christmas...

saw this on Margie Aslett's blog... it was too funny not to share, I'm not sure where she got it.

So what are we t-minus 4 days?!??!

How are ya'll holding up out there????  Done, almost done, not even close to done? Having a mild nervous breakdown?!?!?!?

Personally, I'm doing pretty good here.  Now that is NOT so say that I'm not done with all my Christmas craftiness... actually far from it!  But I did have a great weekend. We went to see A Christmas Carol Saturday night and all of the beautiful Christmas music at church today has really put me in the Christmas "mood".

As for the craftiness... well--- I still haven't decided on a neighbor gift and I decided to make a lap quilt for each child this year...(I have 3 kids). They seemed to transition this year to asking for gifts that "plug in"... rather than just good ole' toys, so I decided that they need something soft and handmade to balance out all the electronic noise that will be in our house on Christmas day....

Well, of those 3 quilts... 2 are pieced, and one is cut out...

As for the neighbor gifts... we'll I started 5 years ago delivering them on Christmas Eve, mostly because I wasn't done with them until then.... then it became a tradition... (even after one year that we ate 10pm  because it took longer to drive around than we thought)... A friend even told me (after I was apologizing for not given her anything yet)... "Melissa, it's tradition, you always bring them over on Christmas Eve"... So I will claim "tradition" not "lack of time"... for my 11th hour gift deliveries.

oh yeah- did I mention I STILL need to decide what I'm doing for neighbor gifts?!?!?

On a positive note, I did manage to mail the package to my family this week (on the last possible day to guarantee Christmas delivery, but hey, it still got mailed),  plan and execute the 3rd grade Holiday party (complete with craft)... make 2 big teacher gifts and 8 smaller gifts for the specials teachers and our great bus driver, wrap 90% of my kids presents & EVEN clean my craft room (I know, amazing huh! don't pass out!).

So…… on a lighter note... because it's fun to have a "lighter note" when it comes to being behind at Christmas time...here is a video that I watched last year and was just too funny not to share.

Are you a "twi-hard"??? I've read all the books and I even went to see New Moon at 12:40 AM the day it came out... but I'm not a "twi-hard"... although it does sound like I am doesn't it?!?!?  (personally, I would not pick either Edward or Jacob, but that's just me)...

Anyway, check this out.. it's hilarious!

Coaster Photo Ornaments

So have you noticed I had a post a day this week? Well I had a bunch of ideas for Christmas crafts to share with you but was putting off getting "photos" of them and organizing the posts.. I realized that Christmas is 2 weeks away (now it's 1 week away! major PANIC on my part!).  So this week I have shared a few of the things that have been "percolating" in my head this season....

Last year I was working with the teenage girls at church. The other women I was working with and I were trying to come up with a nice gift to give the girls for Christmas. We decided to talk about some of the "gifts" that the girls had been given.  The "gifts" we were talking about were the intangible talents and personality traits that each one of them had. We wanted to make them each feel grateful for the gifts that God had given each one of them individually.
To reinforce this we decided to make ornaments a list a special quality that we had observed in each of the girls.
To make the ornaments, we took photos of the girls, then converted them to B&W. In Photoshop  I added the words to the photo, then had the pictures printed.
We mounted the photos on coasters that we got at the dollar store (checked, and they don't have them this year).  We added a scripture to the back then punched holes in the ornaments (had to use a cropadile, they were pretty thick) and tied ribbon through to hang on the tree. (we also inked the edges of the ornament and used a nail file to smooth out the edges)

I think this idea would also make a great present for Granparents!

Memories of Christmas Past

Back when I started this blog, it was a place to "remember" all the projects I had made. I am terrible with taking photos of things I have made.  I went though a "bag" phase, I must have made 100 of them. I don't have a photo of a single one..... People would ask "hey can I see one of the bags you made?" And I would always say "ummm... don't have a picture" I figured the blog would be a good cure for this. And it has been.

Then I decided to work a little harder at the blog thing, and here we are today.

I never know if I should share "my life" on this blog... do you really care? Do you just want the ideas and instructions?  I don't know the answer to that one, but I had a post planned for my personal blog and thought it would be appropriate to share here.  It is Christmas after all and I'd like to share a little of myself with all of you.

thats me in the red

My sister, Emily posted  the top  photo on her blog today.  A flood of memories have started coming back to me today, and I wanted to write some of them down before I forgot.

This was my Christmas sometime back in the 70's... (okay, my sister has obviously raided my parents stash of photos)..... Do you see that Mandy doll???? Did you have one? I was just talking about her with a friend the other night, then Emily posts this today.... Weird huh!!!

Oh and if you're in for a good laugh, do you see that is a Charlies Angels hair kit under the tree???  I also totally remember the 2 large white snowmen... & the Holly Hobby Cradle (that was Emily's gift that year).

HOWEVER,

These are NOT the things I remember from my childhood at Christmas... I have since forgotten  what I got each year- I only remember now,  because of the photos...

BUT the THESE are the things that I do remember...

-Mom baking like a mad woman, we had EVERYTHING! Lemon bread, sugar cookies, graham cracker balls, cakes, pies homemade rolls...It was a veritable feast for the month of December.

-I guess my sister and I were always a little over anxious on Christmas Eve/Morning.  We would not sleep. I'm sure this drove my parents crazy!!! I remember one year they resorted to moving the furniture in the living room so that it blocked the doorway. That way even if we did get up in the middle of the night, we would have to move the furniture to get in to see our gifts, thus making a lot of noise and getting ourselves caught.

-Christmas in Spanish Fork... My Grandpa would always have a fire, I can still see him stoking it when I close my eyes.  And winding the clock that was always on the mantle.  My Grandma would cook... pies usually... and they were in a word.... "unusual"... She would make fruit pies with whatever was in her cupboard. It was not out of the question to have pineapple, apple, raisin, & mandarin orange pie.  Ummm yeah.. not so good.  She also took to coloring her own hair. It was a "secret joke" between my siblings and I to see what color Grandma's hair would be each time we saw her.

Sometime over Christmas break we would undoubtedly talk my parents into letting us sleep over at Grandma's house... when we would wake up Grandpa would have cooked us the BIGGEST breakfast ever!  First course, cold cereal followed by cream of wheat, eggs, bacon (the good kind, from the butcher),  pancakes (with bacon bits mixed in sooooo good! I still eat always bacon with my pancakes).

- One year we traveled to Kansas City (Independence to be exact) to have Christmas with my Mom's family... Aside from the car breaking down in Nebraska (our car ALWAYS broke down in Nebraska... why??!?!?).... I remember the wreath my grandma had. It had little sculpted faces on it... one for each of us in the family... (they were sculpted out of nylons, do you remember those crafts?).  I loved to look at the wreath will all of us on it and see me on it.

This year, my cousin Andy was there (he's a year older than me)... I got a little blender (the kind you push a button and it makes a noise)... Andy got something else, I don't know what it was, but all he wanted to do was play with my blender... Today he is a police man, not a chef... so I guess the interest was short lived.

-My Mom would always sew for us at Christmas... she was quite a seamstress, she denies this now, but I remember it. She would shut herself in her bedroom -we were not allowed in there because she was working on things. She made us baby dolls (yes you can make a baby doll), doll clothes, quilts etc.....

-A couple of gifts I do remember. The year that cabbage patch dolls were "new".. my sister and I really really wanted one. It was a pretty unrealistic gift that year. There were none around and they were pricey. My mom got someone to make us dolls that year. They were all hand made, with the faces painted on and the hair sewn in one strand at a time. A labor of love I'm sure.

-One year we were given a bunch of hand made Barbie clothes.  In later years my Mom shared with me where they came from. A lady in our church made them. She had a handicapped daughter and was single, and struggled to make ends meet.   I guess my parents were having a hard year, because she would not let my Mom pay for the Barbie clothes. I still think of her generosity and tear up.  Even though we had a hard year, we had more than she did, yet she was so willing to serve our family.

that's Mary Ann in the back, she is the oldest.  on a side note, she was a war baby. She was over a year old before my Grandpa got to meet her for the first time.  He was serving in the Navy during WWII.

-My Aunt Mary Ann, (my mom's sister) did not have any girls. So she "adopted" my sister and I. Every year she would send us a homemade rag doll.  She would stitch our names on the tummies.  I have them upstairs, I'll have to take a photo of them an share them.  They came in all different sizes, and all different outfits.  They had curly yarn hair and hand embroidered faces.

Emily at the Bearson family Christmas party.

-There were also, visits with cousins, trips to Wyoming, caroling with the church, & the dreaded Bearnson family christmas party. (dreaded mostly by my Mother, but thats' a story all it's own). Oh I could write a whole book with memories from those parties.

My Grandma had 12 brothers and sisters, most of those 12 kids had 3-4 kids, then those kids had 3-4 kids... you can do the math... it was a big family by the time I came along. They held 2 family reunions a year. One in the summer and one at Christmas. They rented a hall in Provo, and decedents from far and wide (well wide as in Salt Lake County, that was pretty far away for them, most lived in Utah county all their life) came.  We had a visit from Santa, with our own little gift, and a talent show, that I was always required to play the piano at.  The anticipation of the piano playing alone would have been enough to ruin the party, but I didn't seem to care.. there was food, lots and lots of food, & cousins everywhere.   Now, all but 2 of those 12 siblings have passed away, and our families are truly spread far and wide - there are no more Christmas parties in Provo.  They stopped having them a few years ago, I heard it might have had something to do with a food poisoning incident, but I think it's because those 12 were the glue that held everyone together.

I treasure those memories of Christmas in my childhood. Things were not perfect, but that's not what I remember (aside from the car breaking down in Nebraska).  I try to work hard so that my kids will also have wonderful memories of Christmases when they were young.  I always joke that it's really "hard" to be a Mom at Christmastime... You are the one that makes things "special" for your family and sometimes it's really hard to keep up with it all.  I just need to step back sometimes and remind myself why I do it. I remember my parents working so hard to make Christmas special for us each year (and they did) and I am so grateful that they did.  I hope my kids will remember me working hard for them as well....

next post.. memories of Christmas present... then back to our regularly scheduled programming... (i.e. crafts!)

25 Days of December, this year.

Last year was the first year that I decided to make a "25 days of December" Album.. The idea was originated by Ali Edwards, and she has alot of ideas and Q &A on her blog.  Last year I made an album from chip board, this year I decided that I wanted an actual "album" one that would be a bit sturdier to little kids hands through the years. The idea behind the album is to take 1 photo a day and write down what you did that day. This way you had a permanent memory of all the things your family does to celebrate the Christmas season.
I found an unfinished 9x9 album with a linen spine. I covered the album with scrapbook paper then embellished it with some Christmas scrapbook supplies.
For the inside pages I used a variety of pattern paper, felt, acetate and chipboard pages that have tabs. I'm going to go and list some of our "key" activities on the tabs when I'm done.

Inside cover and cover page.

a 7 gypsies journaling card that I clipped in the album. The photos from this day will go on the page after the journaling card and the facing page (both are chipboard)

Another page, just the journaling. I noticed last year I had a hard time keeping up with the journaling, so I'm doing the journaling first then going to go back and add photos and embellishments next (since the photos have a date, it's easy to figure that part out).

25 days of December, last year

Are you guys doing Ali Edwards 25 days of Christmas album!?   I think it's such a great idea and had so much fun doing mine last year. I thought I'd share a few of the finished pages.
I cut 2 pieces of chipboard to 9x12 then covered them with scrapbook paper and used binding rings to hold the pages together.  I used those little white "reinforcement" rings to keep the papers from tearing while the kids were looking at it.
The big problem I had last year with "keeping up" with the project was the journaling. I was typing it up and printing it out. This year I am journaling on notebook paper, it's quicker and more likely to get done!

Tomorrow, I'll share my 2009 25 Days Album

Show and Tell

Remember when you were in Elementary School and you had "show and tell"... wasn't it fun, I always loved it (but that probably comes as no surprise since I'm a blogger and a blog has got to be the ULTIMATE show and tell)...
I always get sooooooo excited when people email me with projects that they have made with my tutorials here or on Moda Bake Shop... So today, we'll have a little "Show and Tell!".
*if you have made something, send me an email, I'd love to put you on the next one!*

Christy from Sew Plain liked my idea for the Skinny Christmas Table runner but instead made placemats!!

How genius is that!?!? She made one for each member of her family. I might have to steal this idea for Easter!

Kelly (who I don't think has a blog, but if you do Kelly, email me I'll add a link) made this Christmas skirt for her daughter using Figgy Pudding Fabric! She used my patchwork skirt tutorial.

Didn't it come out beautifully ????? I should have made one of these for my daughter this year!!

BJ Mama of For What it's worth, or Not  took the pattern from my Birdie Pillow, and made a Christmas pillow instead!

What a great idea!! You could make one for all the holidays and change them out! Did you see the cute holly and berries in the corner? That's my favorite part (oh and the pom pom trim, and the letters... okay I like the whole thing!)

and get this, she made FIVE of them!! 4 for her kids and one for her!!! WOW! She's my hero! What lucky kids!!

Thanks so much for sharing your creations everyone!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them!

Also, I'm trying to "organize" my blog better... I moved all my tutorials links to one page. Just click on the link "My Tutorials" on the upper right side!
