Tuesday Tutorial: Quick Change Corsage Necklace

Tutorial for DIY changeable necklace. So easy to make and just change out the flowers to match your outfit

I love all of the fabric flowers that I’ve been seeing in “blog land” the last few months, and I was trying to think of a new way to wear them.  Lately I’ve been loving long necklaces, so I thought I’d combine the two… then I thought… why limit myself to just one flower? Why not be able to change it out depending on what I am wearing? I saw a similar necklace in a magazine several months ago and thought I’d give it a try!

There are a lot of tutorials out there for making fabric flowers. This one is modification of one that I made for Moda Bake Shop in February. I was just finding things to trace & hand drawing scallops. I saw last week that Becca@ Blue Cricket used cookie cutters! Genius! & much easier than sketching.

Okay… first gather your supplies
You will need:

Basic jewelry tools, pliers and a wire cutter.
Chain: 33″ of a smaller chain
18″ of a bigger chain.
I got mine at a craft store, it was not expensive I bought 2 packages (2 different chains to make it more interesting) they were each less than $5 a package.
Lobster clasps
Jump rings
Split rings (like jump rings but there are 2 layers of wire)
Pin Back
Needle/Thread
hot glue
fabric scraps

Measure your smaller chain so that it is 18″ long, using your pliers, pry apart one of the links of your chain to separate it from the rest of the chain.
Do this again so that you have a second piece of smaller chain that is 15″

Repeat with the larger chain, cut it to 18″

Take the 18″ piece of larger chain and the 15″ piece of smaller chain and using a jump ring join together . Attach a lobster clasp to this end.

To the opposite end of the same chains use a jump ring to join the 2 ends together & using the same jump ring attach the 18″ piece of smaller chain. (you will have 3 chains in one jump ring)

To the opposite side of the 18″ smaller chain, attach a jump ring and a lobster clasp.

It will look like this when you are done.

To make the fabric flower, cut 5 large scalloped circles and 4 small scalloped circles. (fabric is So St. Croix by Jennifer Paganelli)

Fold 4 of the large circles in half and weave together as shown.  Hand stitch together at center of flower.

Lay on top of 5th large flower and stitch to attach it.

Fold 4 smaller circles in half overlap and stitch as you did for the larger circles.  Sew to top of larger circles.
Sew a button to the center of the flower.

To the back of the flower, sew down one pin back and 2 9mm split rings.  I then put a dab of hot glue under the pin back to help hold it in place.

To attach necklace to flower, simply attach the lobster clasps to the split rings. The pin will help the keep the flower from moving around when you wear it.

To make the silk flower…
Go to my tutorial here but do NOT sew the flower to a ribbon.

Instead, cut a piece of felt in a circle.  Sew split rings & pin back to felt, then sew felt to flower.  Use hot glue to securely attach felt circle to back of the flower. (also put a dab of hot glue under the pin back)
