It started out as a simple baby gift...

Fabric, Life's a Hoot by AdornIT, backing Flannel blanket, Target

I have told my children, "just do it the right way the FIRST time, it's just easier that way".  Let's just say, I did not take my own advice on this project!  I just wanted to make a cute little gift for a new baby boy, and thought I had dreamed up an awesome "short cut" way to make this blanket...

I am sooo happy with how it turned out, but for a while there it was a total disaster... I'll spare you the details, but I tried to take a short cut and it didn't work... I had a blanket that would NOT EVEN lay flat! It was such a mess....  oh my such a mess...

I intended to post a tutorial for the receiving blanket, but by the end when I "saved" it I had no idea how to even begin to explain how to do it... So no tutorial, BUT if you do it the right way the first time I'll tell you if you want to make it you need...
4 fat quarters cut to 18x18 each.
1 36x36 flannel receiving blanket and
some really cute fat ric rack!
at some point... there was Minke on the back of it... lets just say I need to dream up a project to use up what are now "scraps" of Minke...

The burp cloth and onesie were super easy. I cut the owls out of the fabric (it's a print with lots of owls in circles, waaay cute!!).   They are just wonder-undered on then stitched around. For the burp cloth I added a ribbon detail to the center.

I "might" try again to make that blanket, but do it the "right way" the first time. If I do, I'll have to let you know how it went.. and post a tutorial!

That fabric is perfect for a fall baby! It all looks so great, too, that I'm having a hard time believing your tale of near disaster.

You'd probably need the squares to be slightly larger than 18x18", since with seam allowance when you sew them together, they'll be smaller than your 36" square backing, right?

Oh me oh my! I just bought some cute flannel for a new baby as well! I never thought of adding the ric-rack, but it makes this blankie look 150% finished and adorable! I would love to know more about how you got the appliques on the onsie and burpie. Can't wait for the tutorial : )

SO cute!! I feel your pain on "saving" the project. I have worked with Minkie before and I always end up in tears in the middle of the project and vow to never use it again. However, when it works out in the end I always think "it wasn't that bad, was it?" I have found that when i use Minkie I have to use a walking foot and baste my project VERY well - so there is no slipping.

ps... LOVE your blog!
