Tuesday Tutorial: Tiered Pillowcase Dress

Here's another variation on the Pillowcase Dress.  This all started a few weeks ago when I wanted to make a simple pillowcase dress for a friends baby. Then I couldn't find a tutorial for one like I wanted, then while I was sewing it I kept thinking of ways to change it.

This idea got stuck in my head this week... so stuck in fact that I could not rest until I finished it.  While sewing this dress, I got another idea for another variation... so guess what you'll be seeing in a few weeks time???

Thanks for all the pillowcase dress links! I'm going to compile them and do a post with the links and my tutorials at the end of the summer. Last summer I was on a skirt "kick" .. I guess this summer it's a pillowcase dress kick!

Fabric Requirements: (up to size 8, larger than that and you may need more fabric)

1/2" yard for tier 1
1/2" yard for tier 2
3/4" yard for tier 3
1/4" yard for sash
1/2" yard for ruffle
double fold bias tape

To begin you will need to do some math. I will include the measurements that I used if you want to recreate a size 8 dress. Otherwise adjust accordingly.

1- Measure from the shoulder of your model down to mid calf. This is the overall length of the dress.  My daughters was 34". Take this measurement and divide by 3" (just round).. I came up with 11".  This is the height of your bottom 2 tiers of your dress.  For the top tier take your measurement and subtract 2".    I came up with 9" tall for my top tier.

2- For the width of your fabric, take your models chest measurement. Just put the measuring tape right under her arms.  Take this measurement and multiply it by 1.25. Round to an even number.  My daughter was 23".. so it came to 28" (rounded).  Take this number (28 in my case) and divide it by 2. This will give you the width of your top tier.

So the top tier of my dress was 14" wide by 9" tall.

3- Take the width of your top tier and times it by 1.5. This will give you the width of your 2nd tier.

The 2nd tier of my dress was 21" wide by 11" tall.

4- Take the width of your 2nd tier (21) and times it by 1.5" This is the width of your 3rd tier.

The 3rd tier of my dress was 32" wide by 11" tall.

5- For your ruffle measurement, take the width of your 3 tier (32) and double it.

My ruffle piece was 3" wide x 64" long.

Now cut your sash pieces, 2 pieces, 5" wide by 42" long. (you will cut some of it off)

You will need the following pieces:

2 pieces for tier one (use your measurements from above)
**for example: I cut two pieces EACH 9"x14" for tier one of my dress, one for the front and one for the back**
2 pieces for tier two
2 pieces for tier three
2 pieces for ruffle

To begin:
To sew dress front:
Run 2 rows of gathering stitches on the TOP only of your tier 2 piece. Pull on threads to gather fabric. Make sure your gathers are evenly spaced and pin to the BOTTOM of your tier 1 piece. Sew.

Run 2 rows of gathering stitches on the TOP only of your tier 3 piece. Pull on threads to gather fabric. Make sure your gathers are evenly spaced. Pin to the BOTTOM of your tier 2 piece.

Press & serge or zig zag seams.

Repeat for back of dress.

To make arm holes in dress.  Measure in 2" from the edge and place a mark. Measure down 5" (or use your own measurement,  an inch or 2 less than 1/2 way down).  Draw a J shape and cut out.  Do this for both the front and back pieces.

Sew front and back pieces together. Match seams.

Press and serge or zig zag seams.

Finish the unfinished arm holes by sewing on bias tape. I made my own, but you could use store bought for sure.

Turn under top of dress 1/4" and stitch. Press.
Turn under again 3/4" and stitch. This will create the casing for your sash.

Sew your 2 5"x 42" sash pieces together at 5" edge.
Fold in half lengthwise and stitch with 1/4" seam.
Turn right side out. Move seam to center of sash and press well.

Feed sash though dress.

Gather up the dress so that it looks good to you. Then tie a bow.

Cut off the extra sash length at a 45 degree angle.

To finish sash edge, turn under 1/4" and use steam a seam to close.

I used some cream textured cotton fabric for my ruffle.  I wanted a more "organic" feel to it so I did not hem it !! (yes, I know! I was thinking of Nina Garcia on Project Runway going "you didn't finish the HEM!!). Instead I just zig zagged it. I was really happy with how it turned out.

There is a good ruffle tutorial here on my Sydney Skirt.. you can refer to it to attach your ruffle.
You're done!! A summer dress! Perfect for twirling!!

NOTES:

* I have made a few other pillowcase dresses (not good enough to share here). Each one I thought had a TOO BIG arm hole. Making it hard to wear.  I cut this arm hole tighter.

* The other problem I noticed is the ribbon slipping and not holding the gathers around the neck. I made the sash MUCH wider than my casing. Now the gathers stay in place.

If you're in the area...

Just a heads up.. if you're in the area... (the central Kentucky area)

This weekend (19th - 20th) is the Antiques Show and Sale at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Shaker Village is a beautiful historical site in Central Kentucky. We try to go there once a year or so, it's beautifully preserved...

I went to the Antique Show 2 years ago and had a great time.  Lots of beautiful things.  If you go, take a lunch, the restaurant there is wonderful but was packed that day, and know it's more of an antique show than a craft show.
It's worth it just to view the grounds, here are a few shots from 2 years ago:

They have the most beautiful curved staircase in the main building.  One of only 2 in the US from what I understand (the other being in the Manti LDS Temple).

If our schedule stays clear (here's keeping my fingers crossed) I'm going to go down this weekend, to shop and to take more photos..

I painted this one this year...

Which I actually managed to sell! (*gasp*)... I had so much fun painting it I'm going back to take more pictures... I see a painted Shaker Village in my future...

2 Layer Twirly Skirt also by Liz Taylor

Also a few "housekeeping" items..

* Thanks so much for your comments on my Summer post!  I'm very grateful for the opportunity to spend time with my kids/family this summer, but I am still having a hard time figuring out the balancing act of fun/work.  I think I need to get the kids to clean the floors for me!  (they do chores, but the housework is piling up and I think they need to step it up a level)...
Plus we have had no time to establish any type of summer time routine since our schedule is changing every day due to camps, sports practices, friends, cousins etc... hopefully I'll have it all figured out before school starts LOL!!

*Giveaways: Thanks so much if you have contacted me about hosting a giveaway. This week I'm finalizing giveaway guidelines to send those of you that are interested. I've received enough requests that I need to standardize things a bit. It will be ready by Friday if you are interested in hosting a giveaway,  just shoot me an email after then and I'll send you the info.

*Tutorial!!! YES I am working on one this week! Just didn't get it done by Tuesday (big surprise!! *wink*). It's another variation on the pillowcase dress... coming very soon :)

Summertime and the livin' is easy....

This has kept me totally preoccupied for the last month.  After 3 years of planning/saving/dreaming we put in a pool... lots of fun but lots of lose ends to tie up, contractors to contact, people to wait around to show up/not show up...

We are now doing lots of this....

Even though there is a GIANT mud pile in my back yard (no sod/mulch) and this...
adorable creature (who btw does not know she can swim)... seems to thoroughly delight in wallowing in the mud and trying to bring it in my house. Which is a problem because :
1- she is the same color as the mud and you can't tell when you have it all off her..
2- who wants their carpets & floors to have  cute puppy paw prints all over them?

School is out and the kids are having a blast swimming and playing. We have had a revolving door of cousins & a few friends in an out for 3 weeks.... The children are blissful... the pool keeps them entertained... I get to sit and watch them under an umbrella while sipping my Diet Coke...

Which brings me to my point today... I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the last 3 weeks I really mean NOTHING! Between not feeling well at the end of May and school getting out and trying to juggle all of these contractors... My floors are covered in mud (as mentioned before)... my sewing room is a mess, and my stairs desperately need to be vacuumed, and oh, let's not even talk about the dishes..... I'm going to have to lock myself in my sewing room sometime this weekend and get some stuff done!! (oh, I really should clean the toilets too)

Sooo... keep watching for more fun things here, I'll still be posting 1-2 times a week all summer, I've got some fun projects planned for outdoors that I'll have to share. Just know it might not be as busy here as before, probably Tuesday Tutorials ever other week.... because I am most likely outside, watching a multitude of children, which is not really a bad thing :)

Tuesday Tutorial: Fat Quarter Baby Dress & Quilt

I love Fat Quarters. I discovered them a couple of years ago. I think I love them for the same reason that I love pattern paper... getting a little bit of lots of different prints in one package just makes me happy :)

I have been buying more fat quarters than yardage lately, which is economical yet sometimes doesn't give me enough fabric to complete a project so I have to get a bit "creative" with the use of them.  Which by the way, has lead to some of my favorite projects. (and why most of my sewing patterns can be made using fat quarters).

This little baby gift is made from 6 fat quarters and 1 yard of fabric (for the backing).  It's a little pillowcase dress & stroller size quilt (it's small about 30x30 finished).  There are enough scraps left from the fat quarters that you could decorate a couple of burp cloths to match if you like, or maybe make a little matching hair bow?

I wanted to make a baby pillowcase dress,  I've seen them around a lot and figured I could just "google it" and a bunch of tutorials would show up... ... but after googling I could not find one... so I thought I'd just give it a try based on an dress made from an ACTUAL pillowcase that I did for my daughter. (she is 9... this one is for a baby though).
My guess is this is sized about 6 months. (based on garment sizing charts, I don't know a 6 month old to try it on).

I really like the way it came out... but I want to do a few things differently next time.. so I think I'll do a little series here this summer on pillowcase dresses... this one being the first. If you have one on your blog or know of a good link, send it too me, I'll do a "summary" post at the end and link up everyone's dress along with the ones that I made!! (I'm sure there are a bunch of pillowcase dress tutorials in cyberspace, I just didn't find them).

Ok to start you need:
2 fat quarters for the dress front & back
1 fat quarter for the ruffle
2 yards of ribbon

Cut each fat quarter to 18"x18".  Find the center of the fat quarter and mark it. Measure out 4 " from each side of the center and place another mark.  Using a straight edge draw a line from the bottom corner of each side to the marks you made.  Cut off the fabric. You will have a trapezoid shape that is 18" at the bottom and 8" at the top. Do this for both the front and the back pieces.
Place an embroidery hoop over the top corner of the dress.  You will be measuring in about 1" and down about 5". Trace the curve.  Cut. Do this for both the front and the back pieces.

Cut 4 strips each 3" wide x 22" long from another fat quarter. Fold in half lengthwise and gather with either a gathering foot on your machine or by running a basting stitch along the entire raw edge.

Sew the dress front and back together at side seams. Serge or zigzag the seam. Press open.

Pin the ruffle to the bottom of the dress with raw edges together. Stitch to attach.

Press seam towards dress, and top stitch right above ruffle.

Turn under under arm seams 1/8", turn under again 1/4". Stitch to hem.  Turn under top of dress 1/4" and stitch. Press.

Turn under top edge of dress another 1" and press. Stitch in place to make a casing for your ribbon.

Feed ribbon through the front and back pieces. Since ribbon poses a chocking hazard for babies, stitch through dress and ribbon in the center of the dress front and back. This will make it so the baby can't pull the ribbon off the dress and choke on it. (although since this dress has a tie around the neck, I would not lay a baby down  while wearing it).

To make the fat quarter stroller quilt you will need:

3 Fat Quarters
1 yard of fabric for binding & backing
Batting
Originally I wanted to make the blocks each 9"x 11" (a fat quarter cut in 4 pieces) however I realized that some of them were not a true 18"x22" and the selvage edges were getting in the way. So I ended up cutting them each 8"x10". You will get 4 blocks from each fat quarter.

Cut your 1 yard piece to 32" x 34". Use the extra from the long (selvage) side as your binding. Cut it to 2" long, you will need 130" total.

To make the 1st row, sew 3 blocks together along the 8" sides, in the order Fabric A, Fabric B, Fabric C
Sew 2nd row of 3 blocks togther in the order, B, C, A
the 3rd row C, A, B
the 4th row A, B, C
Press seams to one side, press the seams on the odd rows to the right and the even rows to the left.

If you want the quilt to be bigger just use more fat quarters  and keep repeating the same pattern.

Sew rows 1, 2, 3 & 4 together. Press seams.

Make your quilt "sandwich" and quilt.
I quilted mine with a walking foot. I stitched 1/4" on each side of each seam. (tried to show a close up of it here).

Bind as desired.

Now to go make that matching baby hair bow...
