Zippy Wet Pouch made from a Shower Curtain

**this is a repost of a guest blogging spot I did for 30 days, Funner in the Summer Series** Reposting it here so I have it in my archives**

Hi!!
My name is Melissa Mortenson and I have a blog called the Polkadot Chair! I'm so excited to be sharing this tutorial with you here today on 30 days!! I've been a fan of Mique's since I started blogging and have loved getting to know her a bit better over the last couple of years.

I LOVE Summer!! I love the pool, the sun, vacations, grilling out, swimming and the "schedule less" days with my kids.

It seems like whenever we are on vacation and packing to come home,  or swimming at a neighborhood pool something is always WET when I leave. I have to admit more than a few times the wet things are forgotten about in the bottom of the pool bag and end up mildewing and ruining all the other things around it!

I love to find fabric in "unexpected" places to sew with.  A few years ago, when I was trying to make a baby changing pad in a more economical way, I discovered sewing with shower curtains.
They are cute, come in a variety of colors and styles, frequently go on sale and give you a lot of yardage for your money.  When I found this one a few weeks ago I knew it needed to be made into something.

Sewing with a shower curtain is easy, you just need to remember a couple of things:
-don't iron anything!! (it will melt, you can lightly steam if you really need to)
-a teflon sewing foot is needed.

For this project you will also need a 16" zipper.

Cut your shower curtain so that you have 2 pieces 14"x17" wide.
Pin the right side of your zipper to the right side of the top of your pouch piece.  Sew. Since you are using a teflon foot and not a zipper foot you might need to adjust your needle left/right a bit to get it in the right spot.

Repeat for other pouch piece.

It will look like this when you are done.

Unzip your zipper.

With right sides together, pin and sew around the 3 sides of the bag.

Clip corners & turn right side out.
You're done! Now all you need to do is remember to take it with you when you go to the pool or the beach!!

Stop by my blog and say "hi" or visit my etsy shop, may & mae,  and check out some of my sewing patterns!!

Guesting again :)

I'm guest posting at Pickup Some Creativity today... sharing some of my favorite tips & tricks! Are they the same tips that you guys use to??

Also- A big storm blew through here and I lost my internet Tuesday!! I'll get that tutorial up for that quilt ASAP!! Sorry again that whole post just seems like it's not meant to be :)

Past Projects week: Post #4 Twirly Beach Skirt

For our Spring Break trip, I made this skirt & tank top for my daughter. We were not going to be home for Easter and I thought it would make a cute alternative to an Easter dress.
It's my two layer skrit tutorial made with some much searched for and found Heather Ross Fabric!

I just cut out a Sea horse for the tank top and appliqued it on.  I keep meaning to add little "ruffles" to the sleeves but so far it's hasn't' happened yet :)

Past Projects week: Post #3, Tiny Apron

Remember the crayon case from Monday? Well I made a little artist apron for my Nephew to go with it.

It was INSANELY easy!!
To make it you just need to trace an existing kids apron you have ( you can buy cheap ones at craft stores).
Trace it onto a piece of laminated cotton, then just turn the ends under 1/4" and sew (you will need a teflon foot).

Find a ribbon in a matching color and sew it on to make the ties!

It would be cute to add a little pocket to it also!

Past Projects week: Post #1 Crayon Holder

I've been sewing and crafting for longer than I've been blogging. While I was in Utah I was "sneaky" and went around and took some photos of a few things that I made in the past that never got blogged before.
This week I'll share a few with you. Most don't have tutorials, but you can probably figure them out.

I made this crayon hold for my nephew for Christmas a couple of years ago. There are lots of tutorials out there now so I'm sure you can find one of how to make it.

It's made from American Jane laminated cotton. I embroidered his name on the front the put a little ric rack in the seams.

On the inside is a pocket to hold a steno pad (tried to find a standard size one so they could replace it when it was full).  And a divided pocket to hold all of his crayons.

The whole thing folds up in half and ties shut, with little handles to make it easier for little hands to carry.

It's one of my favorite projects ever!  I may be persuaded to post a tutorial, we'll see.

Scentsy Giveaway!

I love for my house to smell good! I have quite a collection of scented candles. Pumpkin & Apple scents for the fall, Evergreen for the Winter,  and other fun ones for the Summertime.

My husband very much dislikes it when I burn those candles in our house. I usually leave them in the kitchen and he hates it when the smoke & soot gets all over the cabinets, plus I may have been guilty once or twice of leaving it burning longer than I should have :)

I had heard of Scentsy before but never tried any of their products, so when I was contacted by them about trying some stuff out I jumped right on it!

You can read about it AND

Summertime Inspiration

I like to think of creativity as a sponge. You soak up inspiration for a while then at some point you squeeze the sponge and good stuff starts coming out (or at least you hope).

This summer I've been doing a lot of the "soaking up" part. Lots of ideas trickling around in my head just waiting for the right moment to start oozing out as new projects.   Hopefully I've managed to soak up enough to get me though the winter (oh I despise winter, I don't even want to think about it).

While my parents were here we took a trip down to Glendale, Kentucky.  It's just the kind of place that says "summer" to me.

A beautiful little slice of Americana in the heart of Kentucky.

While there we shopped and ate at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which has been round since '75 serving Fried Green Tomatoes (I don't know if there is a connection to the movie).
It was sinfully delicious, it deserves an "adventures in eating" post all to itself.
I hope something you see inspires you too!

Where it belongs...

When I left Utah 15 years ago my grandmother told me to come over and get her sewing machine before I left. You see, the machine was to be mine after she passed away and she wanted me to have it.   I couldn't go get it, it seemed weird to go and take her things with her around even though it was to be mine "someday". Plus I really think she still used it.

She passed away a few years ago and my parents had been babysitting the machine for me.  I guess I should have considered taking it 15 years ago because 1- it's too heavy and expensive to ship, 2- people don't often drive from Utah to Kentucky.  I wasn't sure if how I'd ever get it out here.

Well after collecting dust at my parents house for years (they didn't have a good spot to store it) I guess they decided it was time to deliver it. So this summer they drove it to me here in Kentucky (they did stay and visit for a couple of weeks too :))...
Now it's here in my house and we found the perfect spot for it.
My dad told me it was actually my Great Grandmothers sewing machine.  She passed it on to my Grandmother.  When I was a kid I remember sitting at this machine and sewing Barbie clothes. My Grandma was always great to let us make a mess in her house and my sister and I used to spend hours back there "cooking" things up on this machine.

From what I understand it still works, .... might have to learn how to use it... maybe my daughter needs some Barbie clothes.

If you build it...

This summer we have undertaken a very large project in our back yard.  I mentioned before that we put in a pool.  While we had someone come and install the pool & fence (much beyond our capabilities), we have been landscaping ourselves.

Making numerous trips to home improvement stores for plants, researching what will grow best in our area, what will give us privacy but still look nice, and what we can afford on what little budget we have left after building the pool.

This GIANT creative project as I call it has taken over most of our summer. For the most part I have loved it. Picking out plants is like picking out fabric, you want to think about texture, contrast, color & scale.  It has taken our back yard from a place we never went out to, to a place we spend all our time in. Even when it's 90 degrees and above 75% humidity...

The backyard "redo" really started last fall.  There was a deck attached to the house when we moved in.   It didn't have stairs to the back yard and it took me 2 years to decide if I wanted them or not (security issues).

before

The deck faces west and was impossibly sunny and hot in the afternoons, when we moved in we threw some chairs out there and that was it. It was waaay to HOT to do anything else.
before

Then last fall we had a pergola built over the deck.  My husband had built decks and pergolas before and I begged and begged him to build this one, but it was much higher off the ground than our previous decks and he just wasn't' comfortable doing it.
Our friends got us in touch with an Amish family that do amazing carpentry work.  They came and built this!! While they were here building I just kept watching them out the windows and giggling... I don't know why, but me and the kids all just sat and spied on them out the window while they were here.  They did a FABULOUS job.

I can not tell you the difference it has made on our deck. We actually go out there now!  Plus I decided to add the stairs which turned out to be a good decision (another post you'll see why).
Here are a few of the after shots. I still have SO much work to do out there, it needs flowers, a outdoor rug, (and to be stained and sealed), but I am happy with the progress we have made so far.  We just keep chipping away at the project a little bit at a time.
In the photo above you can see we added outdoor blinds ($15 at Lowes, a steal!!), we can roll them down and block out the sun in the afternoon.
There is a bench on one side which I love, but every time a little kid would go out there, they would stand on the bench and peer over the side... just a bit nerve racking!! So we added this planter to help the little ones avoid that temptation.  My plan is to fill it with all different sizes and colors of pots and put flowers in them. (probably next year).

I found a mosaic coffee table on clearance & got a few pillows for that corner, I need to make cushions for the benches.
our welcome/go away sign.
Clock & candle holders above the grill.

You can't see it because it's daytime, but we hung big fat christmas lights around the perimeter, so they pergola just "glows" at night it's so pretty. My favorite thing we have done so far is hang these paper lanterns for the top, like we did for the Alice in Wonderland party this year.

So that is just ONE TINY part of what has kept me busy this summer. When and IF I ever get SOD in my back yard again I will take some photos and post about the landscaping that my husband and I have done in the back yard this summer.... Plus I re did the patio under the deck & have a few fun outdoor creative projects to share!!

Adventures in Eating....

Around here Summer is winding down, our school starts early and we are down to less than one month of Summer left.

I'm in denial about it all... we got back from vacation on the 4th and have had family visiting the last couple of weeks. It seems like there still not time to get everything done we want to do. I guess that's just how it goes...

While we've been traveling we've been consuming very yummy food. You see for me,  half the fun of a new place is to go find out what's unique about it's food.  I love to read books about regional cuisine (so far my 2 favorites are Road Food & 1000 Things to do before you die, US edition).
When we go somewhere new I like to ask the waiter what's popular or if they are "known" for something.. 99% of the time I'm not disappointed!

I have this funny quirk, I like to take pictures of my food when I eat out.... yes a bit strange, but like I said for me it's half the fun.

When I was in Utah I got to meet Amy (details in coming up), she has this feature on her blog called "Field Trip Friday". I was telling her how much I liked reading those posts.   I also had a conversation with another friend Ali, about how we like the "peek into your lives" aspect of blogs, and we hope that part of it doesn't go away.... I've been thinking about both of those conversations since I've been home and  I've decided to sprinkle a little bit more of me here.  Not too much, but just a bit more.

Which brings me to todays post "Adventures in Eating".  I thought I'd share some of the yummy food I've eaten in some of the places I've visited... one- to let you know a bit more about me, and two- incase you ever go there you might want to know where to eat!!... Because, you know... You ARE what you eat, or so I'm told :)
Which brings to me to, today's post  about the Hominy Grill in Charleston, South Carolina.

Last year we visiting Charleston with my family, I had read about the Hominy Grill over and over and over again and knew it was on my "must eat" list.  One day while the boys were touring the battleship, the girls went to lunch & shopped. (because that's what girls like to do)

Shrimp & Grits sounded like such an intriguing dish, such an odd combination I thought, but very popular in South Carolina....

As you can see, I devoured the WHOLE thing it was delicious and I still crave it, spicy, creamy, cheesy.... yummy... I bought their recipe book and have yet to try it, if I do I'll let you know how it goes...If you've not had grits before, you must give them a try (just make sure they are cooked well, or you won't like them at all)...

The girls were not disappointed either, yummy food... they got Chocolate Pudding for dessert. It was divine, so divine in fact that it showed up on Food Networks "best thing I ever ate"... we were excited... we chose well.

coming up: (but not all at once)...
-oh my Fried Chicken, it's Paula Deen!
-Meringue piled high.
-Since I never got any pizza in Naples, I guess this will have to do.
-Babaganoush?  what?

The cutest baby shower gift idea!!

We are still having a great time here in Utah, visiting family & friends, eating lots of food & running around like crazy!!

I just had to "check in" here and share this awesome idea!

My sister is having her 1st baby girl and our good friend Ali threw Emily a little luncheon/shower this week.  My sisters friend Kari gave her the cutest gift. She took a bunch of baby things and a clothes line and pins and pinned all the gifts onto the clothesline and put them in a box.
So when she opened the box she pulled on the string and passed it around the table, pretty soon there was a big chain of baby things all around the table!

It was such a fun and idea!! I just had to share it (not my idea... it was Kari's)....

oh now for a little "true confessions"... I bought my sister a baby shower gift-- I didn't make her anything *gasp*... and she's even having a girl!!! (easier to sew for baby girls).... I'll have to catch up and sew some things for my new baby niece very soon...
