Meet Leigh of Leedle Deedle Quilts

Today, meet Leigh!

I met Leigh at the Sewing Summit. She was kind enough to sit with me one night and show me how to make hexies.  She even gave me a few of her templates and some fabric.  She was so kind to share her knowledge with me!

Leigh blogs over at Leedle Deedle Quilts, if you haven’t visited her before, stop by and say “hi” for me! She’s got lots of great creative eye candy on her blog.

She’s a girl of many talents! She also has a etsy shop, Leedle Deedle Designs where she sells handmade jewelry.  Watch for a giveaway from her shop soon but until then  she’s having a sale, 20% off everything Enter code HAPPY20 at checkout.

Q: Okay, to start… just the facts… introduce yourself. Do you have kids? How many? Where do you live? Where did you grow up?

Hi! I’m Leigh. I grew up in Washington state and I live in Utah right now. I told my husband we could never live in California or Utah and those are the only 2 places we’ve lived since we’ve been married. We’ve got 5 boys. They have a lot of energy and make lots of messes. But when I get a minute – I like to sew. Mostly quilts. I am a woman of few words (at least when writing) so if these are the shortest answers ever – I’m sorry. And I have to thank Melissa for interviewing me! I’m excited to meet some new sewing friends.

Q: Favorite Musical group when you were in Junior High… did you have a favorite song?

My favorite band in junior high was the Beatles. My aunt gave me Help! (the tape) one year for Christmas and I listened to ‘Yesterday’ over and over again.

Q: When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

A mom and an artist.

Q: What’s one thing that you’d love to do but can’t?

I can’t enjoy working out. I just can’t.

Q: Any hidden talents?

I guess it’s not exactly a talent, but I can play a little bit of several songs on the drums my husband got me last Christmas. One day I will be a talented drummer.

Q: When and how did you learn to sew?

My mom signed me up for a basic sewing class at Fabricland when I was 9. We mostly made clothes. My mom had made most of our clothes and wanted me to learn how to sew. But she knew we’d never listen to her and that’s why she signed me up for the class. I made a lot of my own clothes in junior high. And I really enjoyed it. Until I started trying to alter things. I gave up sewing for a while (or got my mom to do it for me) and then in college I started making quilts out of my old clothes.

Q: What made you decide to start a blog?

At first I started a family blog so I could document what goes on in my life. But after a while, more and more of it was quilts. I decided to start my quilt blog when the quilts took over the family blog. I didn’t want my quilty friends to feel like they had to read (or skip) over my family posts.

Q: What are your 3 favorite projects that you’ve posted on your blog?

1. My hexagon quilt. It’s usually something I work on during summer car trips. So it will take a while to finish. But it is such an amazing thing. Even I am impressed with it.

2. Same pattern – two quilts. I loved having these 2 quilts done at the same time and seeing the huge difference with them. Usually I never make the same pattern twice.

3. My first real tutorial – a 12 inch (finished) string x block.

Q: What’s the most difficult thing that you have made and posted on your blog? How long did it take you? Any sewing machines thrown out the window?

The fish costume in this post:

It is a really difficult pattern! This time I didn’t even fix my mistakes, I just powered through. I didn’t throw my machine out the window, but I said a lot of swear words in my head while making it!

Q: What fabric do you WISH you had lots and lots of?

Monotone Pez by Sandi Klop. I know that’s not the real name, but it’s my favorite fabric. And she’s got some coming out in January!

Q: What fabric in your stash can you not bring yourself to cut up?

Flea Market Fancy. I have debated for years what to make with it – I was really nervous I’d cut it up and hate the result (that has happened to me before!) But I finally think I have it figured out. I just need to get a few other quilts done before starting a new one.

Q: What’s the next thing on your sewing “to do” list?

Christmas pillows. I want to make this one for a few family members.

Q: Describe your perfect day.

Sleep in. The house magically cleans itself. Husband doesn’t go to work so that we can go out to breakfast together. Husband leaves for work and baby takes a nap. Four year old plays happily with toys (not video games) while other boys are at school. I get to sew. When boys come home from school, husband stays with them and I go get a pedicure. I think after that I could come home, make dinner, and deal with all the crazy. Or maybe I’d go get a massage and go fabric shopping until after bedtime.

  1. Nice to meet you Leigh, love those fish costumes, though I can imagine they’d be swear-word inducing…
