Finding Fabric

Finding fabric and a tutorial on adding a waistband to a pillowcase dress

When I first thought of the theme resourceful for January for my blog, this was the project I had in mind.  Now here it is almost the end of January and I'm just now getting the project up, let's just say that it took a little longer than I thought and required more than it's fair share of unpicking.

Lucky for you, I worked out the kinks... this seems like a simple project, but getting the proportion just right on the waistband of the dress seems to be the key to it looking right.

The tutorial to make this will be at the end of this post, but I wanted to share with you the reason for this little sundress... (that by the way, my daughter asked me why I was so crazy to make a summer dress in the dead of winter, I'm a little stir crazy I guess). I thought it was pretty funny that I was out trudging through the snow to snap a photo of it today.  I ended up using my dress form (I got it on ebay) for the photo, as I didn't have the heart to ask my daughter to model it outside, and there is no natural light inside my house today.

Even before I started this blog one of my favorite things to sew with was sheets. I know that many sew with wonderful found vintage sheets, but I've always sewn with new ones.

Sheets are a wonderful way to get LOTS of fabric for a reasonable price.  Do you remember when PBK had Liberty of London sheets??? I saw those in the catalog and knew right away that I was going to buy them.. the trick was just being patient enough for them to go on sale.  You see good Liberty prints are upwards of $20 a yard at the fabric store.  These sheets (actually this is a twin duvet cover) yielded me the equivalent of 5 yards of 60" wide fabric... that's probably over $100 worth if you pay retail. I can't remember what I bought the duvet cover for, but it no where near $100.

The trick to sewing with sheets I think is finding good quality sheets in prints you like and finding them on sale!   PBK is one of my favorite spots to "stalk"... their sheets frequently go on sale, and since I'm not actually using them on a bed it doesn't matter what size I buy or if I get a "matched set".... Usually they discount their odds and ends and leftovers.

For example this duvet cover is on clearance for $9.99... you can get 5 yards of fabric out of it!!! It would be the perfect print to make a girls skirt or dress, or add as an accent to a pillow.

I don't have a lot of experience quilting with sheets, I know that many quilters have done this with success.

Traci of Amazing Mae is a good friend of mine and has lots of ideas on her blog for sewing with sheets. She always amazes me with her creativity and the things that she thinks to sew with.  She uses both vintage sheets and new ones.

These Road Trip Pillowcases are a favorite project of mine. You can get the info here.

She also makes pj's out of sheets.  Wash them a few times and they get super soft and comfy.

Another friend of mine, Danielle at Savvy Chic Home made drapes out of sheets!

She added the ribbon to the top --- what an awesome detail! They are the perfect accent to her new nursery,  You can see more photos here.

Another project that I saw online recently was this beautiful display by Amy of Diary of Quilter

She used vintage sheets that she had been collecting for the display. You can read more about it here.

Okay,
Now that I have hopefully convinced you to start hunting for sheets... I thought I'd share with you a quick tutorial... a modification of the classic Pillowcase Dress...

So is it funny that I made a pillowcase dress out of a duvet cover and not a pillowcase??

One of the things that I thought the standard pillowcase dress needed was a waist, as my daughter is getting older I think she wants  a bit more shape to her clothes.

I've been making pillowcase dresses on my blog this year, trying to find different variations to the same basic simple pattern..

To make this dress you just need to make a pillowcase dress... there are lot's of tutorials out there...

The measurements for my dress were 37" wide by 38" long with a 1" x 6" cut out for the arms. I also used ribbon for the neck ties not elastic, and used bias tape to fill in the holes. The band on the bottom is made from a 4" wide piece of fabric It's essentially the same construction process I used for the Pillowcase Shirt tutorial that you can find here.

This project I think works best out of a light weight cotton. (quilting weight would be fine, just not heavier than that)... Something like a sheet washed several times, or a voile fabric (it would be great out of the Anna Maria Horner Voiles or Velveteen's). This particular sheet set is Liberty of London, which is similar in weight to a voile fabric.

In addition to the pillowcase dress fabric you will need:

2 yards ribbon (for the neck ties)
2" strip of fabric long enough to go all the way around your dress. (this will hold the elastic waist). If you are not sure, cut 2 strips 2" wide from 44" fabric.
1/2" wide elastic

After you have sewn your pillowcase dress. Take your 2" wide piece of fabric and press it under 1/4" on each long edge.

Measure down 1/3" the length of your dress. For example if your dress is 30" from neck to hem, measure 10".

Place marks 10" down and several spots to make sure your fabric strip is placed on straight.

After you have pinned it in place leave about 1" overlap at each end (you are wrapping your 2" wide piece of fabric all the way around the dress, like you would a belt).  Leave the opening in the side seam.

Stitch in place  close to both edges of your fabric strip. You are making a casing for your elastic.

Cut your elastic to the correct length (measure your child's waist, then cut the elastic the same size).

Feed the elastic thorough.  Stitch ends of elastic together.

To close the opening. Fold under the raw edge of the fabric 1/2" . Lay over the top of elastic and stitch closed where pins are.

To finish up, simply thread ribbon through the neck and hem the dress!

I think this dress would be adorable with a long sleeved t-shirt under it, but it still seems a bit "summery" for the dead of winter. I guess we'll have to hang it in her closet until Spring!

One more "resourceful" idea to come, then it's time for February's focus... "LOVE"..

Moda Progressive Dinner... join me

Okay. {deep breath}

I've been waiting what seems like forever to write this post.   You see last year, the kind people at Moda Bake Shop and Moda Fabrics asked if I'd like to contribute an article to a book they were publishing.   I was ecstatic! Then about 10 seconds later,  I totally panicked... I mean a book, that is a whole lot of PRESSURE!!!

I'm so excited to announce that the first Moda Bake Shop book has been published and is due out in stores this May!! Many talented designers have contributed to this book, I'm in awe that I get to be in such great company.

This will be the first time that I see my name in print, and I can't wait.  About 3 years ago I was browsing my local fabric store and saw a stack of squares of fabric and thought, "it would be fun to figure out something to make with all of those squares." So I put them in my cart and didn't think about them again for a bit.

A few weeks later I made this diaper bag, I was sold.  Being able to buy fabric already cut out seemed like a dream (as cutting out is my least favorite part of sewing). I challenged myself to see what else I could make from those little squares.

Next I made a few quilts..

I kept playing around and after a while I was asked to contribute to the Moda Bake Shop blog.   I am so grateful to have had that opportunity. Contributing to Moda Bake Shop boosted my confidence in my sewing abilities more than anything.

I have so much fun dreaming up what I can make with all of those little squares...

Here are the projects that I've contributed to Moda Bake Shop in the past:

(still one of my favorite creations EVER!)

and here is a little sneak peek at my next Moda Bake Shop project, it will be posted in the next couple of weeks!!

You can also click HERE to see some other projects that I've made with Moda pre-cuts.

Now I can't share with you my project from Fresh Fabric Treats yet, but I can show you a special sneak peek that they sent us.

As soon as I saw this my heart leaped a bit! This books is going to be awesome!!!  I can't wait to get it and try out some of the projects.

Now I come to the reason I am writing this post today.  Moda Bake Shop is holding a progressive dinner!!  Today you get to stop by my little blog for "dinner".. then make sure you head over to visit Kimberly Walus:
She blogs over at bitty bits and pieces.. her blog is totally awesome as are her Moda Bake Shop projects, you need to check out her blog, plus you can join her for Dessert on our progressive dinner!!!

If I were able to invite you all to dinner at my house, we'd have something warm and comforting, especially since it's so cold outside.

I'd serve you some warm soup, crusty bread, then invite you to come and see my favorite room in my house, my sewing room...

I'd invite you to sit in my polkadot chair (yep, that's THE Polkadot Chair)....

then show you where I work!

But, since you can't come visit me and sit in my Polkadot Chair, I will instead share with you my recipe for that yummy soup.

This recipe is from Traci at Amazing Mae, it's one of our family favorites and one of the few that all of my kids will eat! Perfect for a wintry day!

Pasta Fagioli

1lb mild Italian Sausage
1/4 c. finely chopped onion
4 c. chicken broth
1 can petite diced tomatoes
1 can canelleni beans
1 can kidney beans
1/2 c. ditalini pasta
1 1/2 t. Italian Seasoning
salt & pepper
parmesan cheese

I use link italian sausage, you can also use ground.   Brown link sausage in olive oil in a large stock pot.  Remove from pan and slice into bite sized pieces (it does not need to be cooked all the way).  Add onions to the pan and cook until translucent.  Add sausage back to the pan. Add chicken broth, tomatoes.   Smash 1/2 can of the canelleini beans ( you can also use 2 cans of beans if you like).  Add kidney and canelleini beans to pot. Add pasta and cook until pasta is tender. Serve with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese.

Keep your eyes out for Fresh Fabric Treats to be released!! As soon as I get the go ahead I'll share with you my project from there. There will also be some fantastic giveaways going on here to celebrate!!!

In the mean time, make sure you stop by the other blogs on the Progressive Dinner!!!!

Slip slipping away....

It feels like January is slipping away quickly, although I still think that Spring can not come soon enough.  I've had it with gray skies and cold weather, my soul needs some sunshine and warmth!  There is one up side to the cold skies of January,  it's time to start planning for Valentine's day!

We {love}  Valentine's day in our house. I've already started thinking of new crafts to make this year to celebrate. I got a great idea for a special Valentine's day themed craft, then went searching for the supplies this week and could not find a very essential item!  So I guess it will wait another week, I hate it when I get a "bee in my bonnet" and then can't complete the project.

We are not done with "resourceful" here in January -- still to come are some sewing and clothing ideas, but I've decided that my February focus is "LOVE"... original I know.  *wink*

Since craftiness, especially around holidays requires some lead time, I thought I'd do a little preemptive Valentines day post....

Here's a link to some of the crafty Valentine's Ideas featured here in the past...

enjoy...

The Valentines Day Chairbacker pattern is now back in the shop. It features full color photos and templates for both the heart and an entire alphabet so you can make what ever name you like.

Here are ours in "action" from last year's celebration... I think I need to make a "Mom" and "Dad" one this year too... maybe then something small and sparkly will show up in my pouch :)

Also...

I hope you enjoy your week of crafting or whatever it is you get to do!  We are off to Salt Lake City this week for a short trip, so if you see someone at a fabric store that you think looks like me, say "hi"!!!

Make your own mud room lockers...

I really really love IKEA... I think I've said that here before, but it's worth repeating.  The thing that I realized I like about IKEA is that most of their stuff is simple, making it very easy to adapt to different purposes.

Since my motto for the month on the blog is resourceful I thought I'd share with you how we made lockers in our mud room easily and inexpensively using bookcases I found at IKEA.

The photos are not great, it's a very narrow room with terrible light and even with a separate flash is very hard to take photos of.

This is our mud room right after we moved in, it was not working for us. It's a combo mud room/laundry room and is way to small for our family.

This is it before.... It's just a hallway that leads from the garage into the house.  It drives me crazy and is the one thing I would change about my house if I could...

Now I will say, the laundry side of this room is still NOT working for me. It's one of my big projects for  2011 to figure out what to do with it, but I have NO idea... open for suggestions on that one.

BUT

the mud room side thankfully is now working for us. I'll show you what we did about a year ago, and it's still working great.

such a narrow room it's really hard to get a good photo of it
Since the room is narrow and most "pre made" lockers are wide at the base, none of the ones that I found  online and in stores would work for us.  They would all just stick out too much from the wall and you could not walk through the room.

Then one evening while I was perusing my IKEA catalog I saw this... It's the Billy bookcase, and it's only $34 for the size I needed.  It would have been ideal to have someone come and build us custom lockers but it wasn't in the budget at that time.

So what we did was buy 5 Billy Bookcases (it's what would fit and there are 5 of us) and install them next to each other. I also installed a hook at the end for long coats that would not fit in the lockers.

Then instead of putting the shelves spaced evenly throughout the bookcase we left a space in the middle to attach a hook for backpacks and coats. It worked great because the bookcases have holes all up the side so we could put the shelves exactly where we needed them. If you had really small kids you could install the hooks even lower.

We then left 2 shelves on the top for things like lunchboxes & books.

how embarrassing, now you can see what shoes we all wear :)

and 2 shelves on the bottom for shoes.

If you want to tackle this project I'll give you a few tips.

-After you have the bookshelves where you want them, screw them together. So you have one large piece, it will help with stability.

-The bookcases come with a precut notch in the back to make them lie flat against the wall, if your baseboard is taller than the notch you will need to cut the notch larger. It's very important that they fit flat against the wall.

-The back of the bookcases are just particle board, not strong enough to hold a coat hook. You will need to buy a 1x4 piece of wood and cut it to the width of the shelf and place it behind the bookshelf. Then you will screw your coat hooks through the back of the shelves and into that wood.

-Use the anti tip kit that comes with the bookcases so no one will try to climb up and pull the whole thing onto them. (make sure you install them into a stud in the wall, we installed as many as we could just to be extra sure).

I had plans to use the bookcases only temporarily then get custom lockers made later, but it's been over a year and they work so well that I don't think I'm going to do that. I'd rather use the money for another project in the house.
