Tutorial: Pillow made with printable fabric

In November I shared this pillow on the Rhonna Designs blog.  Today I thought I'd share a tutorial to make the pillow.

I got the idea because I found myself looking at the digital files from Rhonna Designs and wishing I could buy fabric with the same designs.

Then I realized I could print on fabric to make a small project.  I decided on a pillow for my sofa that was  very much in need of some "bling"

To make the pillow here's what you will need:

Printable Fabric- you can't use just anything- although I know there are tutorials online to make regular fabric accept inkjet ink, I just purchased ink jet fabric at my craft store.

Lace trim- I finally found a good use for some vintage trim that I picked up in the Flea Market in Paris.

Pillow form- I used 12x12  but you can make it any size you like- or just use stuffing.

Cording (if you want to make your own you can use this tutorial)

Fabric for Pillow back and front.

Print your design onto the printable fabric according to the manufacturers instructions.  Most manufacturers require that you heat set your design after it is printed.

To add some texture to my pillow, I added some hand embroidery to the honey combs and some heat set rhinestones.

Trim your fabric to size (in this case 8x8) and sew 2, 2"x8" strips of fabric to the top and bottom of your fabric piece.

Stitch 2 additional strips of fabric each 12" x 2" to 2 remaining sides of pillow.

Stitch lace to front of pillow on top of the seam.

Stitch cording to front of pillow along the outer edge. Overlap cording at corner.

Place pillow back (cut to 12" x 12") on top of pillow front, right sides together. Stitch along the line you just made to attach the cording. Leave a 8" opening.

Turn the pillow right side out.  Stuff pillow form into pillow and hand stitch opening closed.

Cute, cute pillow! I feel that you are right...for best results you must use a pretreated fabric. Your digital design is fun and the added texture of embroidery is perfect!
