Patchwork & Leather Zip Pouch Tutorial

Polka Dot & Leather Zip Pouch by Knitty Bitties

Hi, I’m Andrea from Knitty Bitties

Project Polka Dot?

Uhm, I’m sorry, but if that showed up in YOUR inbox would you not say, Yes please! When & Where?
Well if you wouldn’t then I’m not sure we can be friends … because I LOVE polka dots that much, it *might* just be a deal breaker!

So, to say I’m happy to be here sharing my love of polka dots with all of you is an understatement.

My brain was swimming with ideas to share and honestly, I started to stress out a bit. I knew the bar was going to be set high with the creative group of guest bloggers. In the end, I decided to stick with a tried and true tutorial jazzed up in a new polka-dotty + leather way.

I just love Anna’s {free} Wide Open Pouch tutorial. It’s become my go to for gift-giving. I also am currently loving sewing triangles. The obsession started at The Sewing Summit when I took an equilateral triangle class from Jeni of In Color Order.

It’s such a quick / stress-free method of sewing triangles. Also, leather. I’m sure you’ve seen it popping up all over the creative world … it’s kinda an IT thing right now.

Again, my obsession with sewing with leather started at The Sewing Summit when I took a class from Lindsey of LR Stitched. And just to bring it all full circle, The Sewing Summit is also where I had the pleasure of meeting Melissa in real life!

I put all that creative inspiration into my brain, mixed it up and came up with this pouch.

To create the pouch’s triangle top, I used {4} Fat Quarters from this Spot On bundle by Robert Kaufman.

I cut a 7.5 x 18 strip from each FQ and then sub-cut the strip into equilateral triangles, using the 60-degree angle on my cutting mat. Each top piece uses {4} full triangles and {2} half triangles.

For the bottom of the pouch, I used suede leather. To accent the leather, I “stitched” along the edge with {3} strands of coral embroidery floss.

To create the guide holes, I used a leather needle in my sewing machine and a stitch length of 4 and no thread. The needle punctured the leather and created a guide for my embroidery accent.

{Note: Embroidery thread is 100% cotton and will most likely wear away due to the leather’s natural oils. I was willing to take the chance, especially since these are decorative stitches. I used a polyester thread to sew all my leather seams.}

I finished the pouch off with a cute scrap of leather to create this sweet little leather pull.

It’s all the little touches that add up to make a big impact! That and the polka dots. I mean come on, how can it not be cute with 5 different polka dot prints?!

  1. I love this pouch so much! Andrea did an amazing job. ANd great tip about putting on the embroidery and great bits about sewing with leather. 🙂

  2. That’s so cute!! I LOVE leather, but I’m scared to death to try and actually use it. You’ve just inspired me to bite the bullet and pick some up. What’s the worst that could happen?!

  3. I love this pouch but I don’t know how to cut the triangles (although I could prob figure it out if I dared to just make the first cut). I have a straight ruler with 60 degree angle on it. Also, I don’t know what size the leather piece is. The rest of it I think I get. Any tips would be appreciated. Thx

  4. I’m also looking for the cut size of the leather. Is there more of a tutorial and we are just not seeing it? The pouch is darling….I will be making one of these!

  5. This tutorial is quite basic. There are no actual measurements or step by step pictures/instructions. Also, OP is avoiding answering size of leather bottom. Great idea but not such a great tutorial.
