Navy & White Guest Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Today I’m excited to share with you how we restored our bedroom after a recent flood, and hopefully give you a few guest bedroom decorating ideas. If you like this project you may also like to see how we made over our Kitchen.

Let me tell you a scary story, full of peril, narrow escapes, and ocean voyages. Just kidding it is not THAT serious, (I just have Lemony Snicket’s voice stuck in my head right now *wink*).

Guest Room Remodel Back Story

Last Spring, we were in the middle of last-minute preparations to leave on a cruise for Spring Break. I don’t know why I always leave so many things to the last-minute when we go out-of-town, but I do. I’m really working on fixing that. The night before we left, we noticed that the toilet in the basement was backed up. We couldn’t clear the backup and asked our plumber if he could swing by in the morning before leaving.

We need to drive to Orlando to catch the boat, and wanted to leave by 9 am to make sure that we had ample time for the drive.  The morning we were due to leave,  I got up and jumped in the shower. When I got out of the shower, I thought that the “toilet smell” seemed a bit worse than the night before, so my husband and I went downstairs to check it out.

When we got downstairs, we were mortified to find inches of sewer water in our basement  (and a smell you wouldn’t believe). We have a walk-out basement and have never had a water problem before and were shocked to see what a mess it had become overnight (Lucky for you, I didn’t take any photos of the flood, trust me, it was GROSS).

Upon further investigation, we discovered that the bathroom, hall, and guest room were the worst hit.  Since we had not had any guests come and visit in a while, we were using the guest room as the “I don’t know where to put this, but I don’t want to get rid of this, room”.  It was full of stuff. Bedding, pillows, boxes, extra rugs, etc. The carpet in that room and everything that was on the floor was soaked.

Mind you, we were due to get on a cruise ship at 4 pm the next day, and the cruise port was a 14-hour drive from our house.  Neither my husband nor I trust ourselves to drive through the night and quickly realized that if we didn’t leave by 1 pm that day we would not have enough time to drive to the boat.

Panic set in, and we had absolutely no idea what to do. Thankfully our plumber stayed calm and was a tremendous help. In a matter of hours, the plumber was taking care of the clog, and the restoration company was ripping up our carpet and taking out our drywall. They told us we’d need to leave the house and asked for a key.  At this point, we decided hastily to try still to go on the cruise. I grabbed my laptop and camera and just prayed that the rest of the stuff in the house would be safe. I told myself if anything happened, it could all be replaced, and we left.

We made it to the cruise ship with 2 hours to spare. I checked into our room and collapsed onto the bed.  While we were gone, we had friends and family checking on the house for us and texted us that all looked a-okay.

When we came home most the basement was torn up but thankfully sanitized and clean.

We found piles of stuff everywhere, and we weren’t really sure what was thrown out and what was left. A few of the casualties of the flood included a favorite rug (that I bought in Turkey), our guest room bedding, and lots of pillows. (That’s what I get for leaving the pillows on the floor).

The mattress did not get wet in flood but had wet items put on it in the chaos, so it had to go. Slowly over the last few months, we’ve been putting the basement back together again. We had to hire help with the tile and drywall and do a lot of the work ourselves.

We opted not to put carpet back in the guest room and spent the extra money on tile. I hope this never happens again, but just in case, the tile will hold up much better.

Here are a few more shots of the room as it is today.

It seems funny to me that I’m introducing you to a Yogabed today and talking about zen restful sleep, since the way we went about needing the bed was so much the opposite. I will say that through this experience (and a few other crazy things that happened over the summer) that I’ve come to appreciate the utter joy of collapsing into a comfortable bed after a long day’s work.

Our New Mattress

I was contacted by Yogabed and asked if I’d like to review one of their mattresses. I immediately said yes; the timing was perfect since we were short a mattress and several pillows.

The bed arrived within few days of ordering, which was fantastic since it saved me from borrowing someone’s truck to buy a mattress.  The bed comes in a box, and I think it is crazy that a King size mattress fits in a box, but it totally does!

After a bit more prep in the basement we were finally ready to “unbox” the mattress and get the room put back together.  I did need help carrying the mattress into the room, so I’d say it’s a two person job, but the setup was super easy.

The mattress arrives compressed, you then simply remove the wrapping and in a matter of minutes it springs to life. The kids got a big kick out of watching the whole unboxing process.

FYI, the mattress does not have to be used with a box spring. It has a firm layer at the bottom and can be placed on a steady surface, we chose to use a box spring since our bed is a bit low.

My parents come to stay frequently, and I think it would have been a bit low for them without a box spring.  We used a box spring that we already had; we did not need to purchase one specifically for the bed. This mattress works with whatever box spring or bed that you already own.

For some reason our new puppy seems to show up anytime there is anything “interesting” going on around the house. The mattress was not out 5 minutes before he jumped up on the bed and claimed his “spot”.

Turns out right after we got the guest room put back together that our A/C went out in the house. It was 85 degrees outside and much too hot to sleep in our room. We took up residence in the guest room for a few nights while it was getting fixed.

So yes, I’ve slept in the bed. I’ve also taken NUMEROUS naps on the bed, as I seemed to need frequent breaks while tackling our basement project.  I also think that I might escape to this room a few times a day; I mean, I can be a guest in my own home, right?? I bet the kids wouldn’t miss me if I disappear for an hour or so every day *wink*.
