School Christmas Party Ideas; Scarf Craft

This simple fleece scarf tutorial is great to use for a school classroom party.

One year I was the room mom for my kid’s class at school.  For the Holiday party, I needed to come up with an inexpensive, easy, kid-friendly craft, that did not involve food.

I searched for school classroom party ideas and didn’t come up with much. After much thought, I decided that it would be fun for the kids to make their own scarves!

I decided to have the kids make their own scarves from polar fleece.  Our school colors are orange and blue so I decided to go with school colors.

For this Kids Christmas Craft You’ll Need

Polar Fleece in Two Colors:

I bought polar fleece (waited for it to go on sale!) that was 60″ wide.

I then cut it into 5″ strips then cut the strips in 1/2 so that the scarf measurements were 5″x30″.

This way you can get 14 scarves out of 1 yard of material.

For the fringe I cut 5×5 squares.

I pre-cut these pieces at home then when we got to school the kids assembled them.

How to Make the Craft in the Classroom

I had the kids cut the 5″ squares into fringe (their school scissors worked great). Make sure they only cut a part of the square into fringe, not the whole strip, otherwise it will fall apart!

Next, I had the kids use fabric glue to glue the fringe pieces to the scarves.

If do this craft with kids that are old enough,  you could also have them embroider their initials onto the ends with embroidery floss. We tried this but it was a bit too hard for the kids (my kids were first graders).

My kids love them and still wear them this year.  I’m in charge of the Holiday party again this year, I’ll share what we make.

  2. Great idea…I might just make them for the kids and give as a little gift. I can quickly sew the fringe and maybe have them cut it…we don’t have a holiday party, but I am volunteering the day of the Christmas program so that morning is just devoted to FUN in my son’s class room.
    Thanks!

  3. What a great idea! Would have loved to try this at my daughter’s school but their party is only 45 minutes. Seems like when I was a kid, we had all day or at least the afternoon. Still a cute idea!

  4. Love this idea! I usually help out with the parties in at least one of my kiddos classes. Very original and FUN!

  5. You.are.a.genious.and.I.now.adore.you. 🙂 I have been racking my poor brain for a last minute craft for second graders (just found out that *I* am in charge of crafts. YIKES) Party is in two days and I was starting to freak a bit. Love this idea! Thank you 🙂
