Recently someone contacted me with questions about this project. You’re probably just seeing it today, but it’s been on the blog for a number of years. “Back in the day” when I first created this project, I just did it as a “here’s an idea” type project, not a full tutorial with printable.

After answering the reader’s recent questions, I decided to update this project to be a more complete tutorial, and have included a free printable for both the Winnie the Pooh quote and the hexagons on the hoop. So I’m sharing it with you again today, enjoy!

Winnie the Pooh Quote Embroidery Hoop Art Tutorial

So there was this adorable little girl. She was born 18 years ago and had a Winnie the Pooh in her nursery. She used to watch The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh over and over again. Her Mom picked her up some Winnie the Pooh prints at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.  She didn’t think the Heffalumps and Woozles were too scary.

What happened to that girl? Well, she’s not a little girl anymore, she’s now a college graduate.  Just like Christopher Robin left his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood to go to school, that little girl left her family to learn about things like twice times and where a place called Brazil is.

Recently I watched Disney’s The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh movie. I adore that movie.  I adore the hand-drawn animation, I adore the dialog, and the story and the characters. It’s one of those kids’ moves that I could watch over and over again and not get tired of it. I love the fact that Disney kept so much of A.A. Milne’s original text.

I decided to create some embroidery hoop art using one of my favorite quotes from the movie, which seems especially applicable with my daughter headed off to college.

How to Print on Fabric

To get the “words” onto the fabric for this project, I just used my inkjet printer. Yes, you can print on fabric using your home printer. (This is the inkjet printer I have, I love it).

However, if you do this, please know it is not waterproof. So if you spill anything on the fabric the ink will bleed.

This technique works great for wall art like today’s project. If you want to print on fabric to use for a pillow or a quilt, then you will need to buy special Printable Fabric. The brand I like the best is Electric Quilt.

How to Get the Printable

Just fill out the form and we will email you a copy of the printable quote and template for the hexagons.

Print the PDF

  • To print the PDF, just run the fabric through the printer on normal settings. Just a note: this will work for Art but it will not be water safe or washable.

Trace a Circle

  • Using your embroidery hoop as a guide, trace a circle using the outside of the outer hoop. Make sure you are tracing the OUTSIDE of the largest hoop. Otherwise, you will not have enough fabric for the front.

  • Remove the paper backing from the fabric. Trim down your fabric quote and iron onto a piece of quilt batting.

Cut out Hexagons

  • Cut out 8 hexagons from your wool scraps. There are 3 sizes provided on the printable template. Choose the size that fits your embroidery hoop the best. Place on the fabric in a pattern that you like.

Add Hand Stitching

  • Using a simple backstitch, stitch around the edges of each of the hexagons with embroidery floss. I put my quote in a larger embroidery hoop to make the stitching easier. Then removed it from the hoop when I was done.

  • Insert into your 8" embroidery hoop and trim off the excess fabric.

Notes

You can do this for any saying that you’d like.  It will not work with all inkjet printers but I have successfully printed on fabric using 2 different printers. It will not work with a laser printer.

  1. Great Project! However, I wanted to tell you that Epson ink jet printers that use
“Dura Brite” ink, is Waterproof and will not run or fade if it gets wet. Even on paper or business cards etc.

I use a Epson Ink jet printer to print all my labels, because I love the Dura Brite ultra ink!
