As a part of my partnership with BERNINA I write articles for their We All Sew website a few times a year.  When I was talking to them about what projects would be a good fit for this year, we came up with the idea of a summer sewing project for kids.  It’s so hard to find things for kids to do to fill their summer days. My kids are too old to just play with friends all day, but not quite old enough for a summer job.  I’m also trying to foster independence in them and have been looking for projects that they can do mostly by themselves.

My youngest daughter has taken a few sewing classes at a local shop and has come to realize that she really enjoys sewing.  I sat down with her to brainstorm a fun project to share with readers this summer. We came up with the idea for this custom appliqued pillowcase.

She actually did almost all of the work! It was pretty sweet, I just gave her a few directions and stood back and snapped photos while she worked. I think I may have to recruit her for a few more projects in the future!

The appliques on the pillowcase are made from the kids OWN ART! They can design whatever they like for the project.  To get all of the details and directions just hop on over to WeAllSew.com !

Also, did you guys know I wrote a book about sewing for Teens? It’s called Project Teen and although it was geared toward adults as projects to sew FOR teens, I have been hearing from many teens that are sewing projects from the book themselves!

Project Teen Book by Melissa Mortenson - 21 Projects to Sew that Teens and Tweens will actually LOVE!

The book features projects ranging from BEGINNER to Advanced Intermediate. Here are few of the projects in the book that I think would be partciually suited to teens to sew themselves.
