DIY Sewing Room Decor Ideas {and free Cricut Cut Files}

I’m always looking for fun and unique ideas to decorate my sewing room.  I love using things like a cookie jar, decorative baskets, bento boxes for purposes other than what they were intended.

Today I have a project for you that also uses a few items in unexpected ways to decorate your sewing space.  I hope you like these DIY Sewing Room Decor ideas and don’t kill me for suggesting that you add a vinyl decal to your quilt rulers!

There is this thing with “ideas” that I love and hate.  You can’t really control when you are going to have an idea, and are really never sure what will spark a great idea.  There have been many times in the past that I have HAD to come up with an idea for a project, and been completely stumped. It’s just not the kind of thing you can force.

Last week I was scrolling through Instagram kinda fast and two photos were next to each other, a quilt t-shirt and a photo of some quilt rulers. In my head, since I was scrolling so fast I thought the words were on the quilt ruler. Turns out they weren’t, but it sparked an idea. Add decals to quilt rulers then use them as wall decor in a sewing room!

I went upstairs and began designing the decals right away.  Today I’ve provided 3 different ones for you to pick. Also, you don’t HAVE to use these decals on a quilt ruler, you can also just put them on the wall in your room.

Now I know what you’re thinking, you can’t use the rulers now… right? Well, I think you still “could” if you really wanted to, depending on how you cut and measure. Personally, I have a few duplicate quilt rulers and just ended up using some that I knew were “extra”. You could also use a ruler that was older, for example, if you’ve replaced it with a newer version that you liked better.

To make the decals you need a Cricut Machine (you can also use a Silhouette, but I don’t have one currently, so I can’t give you accurate instructions). You will need to download the cut files from my website (a link will be included later in the post), upload them into the Cricut Design space, cut out the decals then apply them to the rulers.

Okay, are you ready to make one?

Supplies Needed to Make the Decorated Quilt Rulers:

-Transfer Tape

-Quilt Rulers

-FREE .svg cut files; CLICK HERE TO download them on the TEMPLATES PAGE
Begin by uploading the files to the Cricut Design Space.  Insert the image into the design space then click on ALL of the layers (using the palette on the right) and click MERGE. This will ensure that all of the pieces cut in the correct spot.

Cricut SVG File: Note: all files in the Library are for personal use only. You may not sell items you make with the files. To get these files into the Cricut Design space, you need to visit OUR CRICUT LIBRARY and follow the directions. When prompted, select the button and save the file as an SVG to your computer. Please do not open it in a new window. It will load as an image, not an SVG. Next, go to the Cricut Design Space page with your browser. Select NEW when the screen pops up; select IMAGE. Then select – upload. Upload the image you obtained. It’s ready to use in Design Space!

How to Cut Out the Vinyl Letters:

Size the decal so that it is 1″ smaller than your quilt ruler.

Cut.

Peel of the excess vinyl.

How to Add the Lettering to the Quilt Rulers:

Cut a piece of transfer tape the same size as the cutout and apply the sticky side of the tape to the cutout.

Center it over the quilt ruler and use a credit card or plastic knife to get the decal to stick to the ruler well.

  1. I think your idea is great! I have a couple of rulers that are nicked, but I keep them for just in case, but they would be perfect for this. Thank you for sharing your idea and great tutorial! Have a fantastic creative day!

  2. Hi! First of all I LOVE your blog and have made many of your projects! Can you share where you got the fabulous fonts you used for the sewing room decor project? I have been searching for “swirly” fonts and these are great. Thank you!
