DIY Polka Dot Wood Sign Ideas

Today meet Gretchen, she’s sharing with us how to make a DIY wood plank sign. It’s an adorable piece of rustic home decor!

Hello there, my name is Gretchen Black, of Nesting in the Bluegrass and Lulubelles and I am happy to be a guest blogger today on Polka Dot Chair. A little background about me, I am a design enthusiast, I love DIY projects, adore all things aqua, and I design handmade jewelry out of vintage pieces for a company that I co-own with my cousin called Lulubelles.

So today I have a DIY art project that is pretty easy to conquer, and I am going to give you an idea of how to incorporate it into the design of a room.

Here is what artwork looks like finished….

The supplies you will need…

1×6 pine slats

Wood screws

1×2 board

Paint

Paint brushes

Drop cloth

Pencil

First you will need to secure all the boards together. I used six boards cut to 24 inches in length. You do this by securing the 1×2 boards to the back. I used three of them.

Once you have your boards secured, then you can plan out your paint colors and the quote you will use. I chose the quote “Take time to do what makes your soul happy.” This is one of my favorite quotes, and I think it is a great motto to live by. It is one of the reasons that I craft, create, and blog, because it makes my soul happy!

So here are the supplies I used for the next steps….

I really love the combination of minty aqua and gold, so that was an easy choice for me. 🙂

I painted two coats of white paint on the wood.

I used Behr two in one primer and paint. We happened to have some left over from another project.

Once the boards are painted and have completely dried, then you can begin tracing out your quote. I decided to just free hand, but you can certainly use a stencil if you feel more comfortable with that.

After I drew the quote, then I grabbed my paintbrush and began painting over the letters.

I ended up going over the lettering twice, to make sure that I covered up all the pencil marks. If you are using dark paint, then you may only need to go over it once. 🙂

Now time to add the polka dots!

I found the circle sponge paintbrush from Michaels Craft Store. It came in a pack of three. I used the largest one. It was really easy to dab the dots around the artwork. I tried to use a random pattern. Lastly, I sprinkled glitter on each of the dots before the paint dried, just for a little extra sparkle.

You can see how the glitter adds just a little bit of sparkle to the artwork.

Voila’ here is the finished product. I am probably going to hang this in my studio space, but I dreamed up a fun eclectic sitting room that I think this artwork would be perfect for! This room depicts my design style. I like rooms that look like they have been collected over time. A little vintage, a little modern, and a little aqua 😉 Hopefully you feel inspired by my post, and will make yourself a polka dot art piece. Polka dots are fun and happy, and we all need a little more happy!
