Easily Interchangeable Headband Tutorial

Learn how to use a quarter yard of fabric to create an interchangeable fabric headband with our simple step-by-step tutorial.

Hi everyone, Jess the Sewing Rabbit from the Me Sew Crazy blog!  I was so excited when Melissa asked if I would be a part of her Polka Dot Project you see – I have admired her site for quite a while now. It’s hard not to love something with Polka Dot in its title, right?

But Polka Dots and I have had a tough road. I have always loved this fabulous and fun print but have had a hard time figuring out how to use them just right. Too many and the print swallows up any design it may have originally had, too few and its no longer polka dots – but rather just a few circles.

After many fabulous polka-dotted sewing flops, we are finally starting to find our way. As I was coming up with my handmade Spring Clothing Collection for the kids, I knew I wanted to incorporate a polka dot dress into it.

By adding concentrated hand-stamped polka dots along the bottom edge of the dress, it manages to break them up without overwhelming the dress. This is probably one of my favorite items from the entire collection, upcycled from an old men’s button-down!  It only cost me $2 – you can’t beat that!  The tutorial for the dress is on my blog today.

I thought I was done with the look when I completed the dress….but then I stumbled across this fabulous scrap at my local fabric store and knew I had to have it.

Making an interchangeable fabric headband is super easy. It will take you all of 5 minutes, I promise!!!

Table of Contents

Supplies:

  • 1/4 yard of Fabric
  • Plastic Headband
  • Basic Sewing Supplies

Instructions:

  1. Fold the fabric with the right sides together and sew along the outer edge.
  2. Turn the fabric right side out.
  3. Slip the fabric tube over the plastic headband.
  4. Tie knots in both ends of the fabric at the sides of the headband.

Super easy, and you can switch it out for any fabric at any time. Gotta love that! An easy headband you can whip up to match any outfit you may be wearing. Why do I love this so much? Because I can wear it too. HA

Thank you so much for having me here today, Melissa; it has been so much fun following along with all of this Polka Dot goodness!

Thank you so much Jess! I love that headband I think I would make one for myself, make that daily ponytail of mine look a little more fancy!
