The Ruby Lou Bag: A tutorial

Updated: Oct 3, 2017 by Melissa Mortenson · This post may contain affiliate links · This blog generates income via ads · 13 Comments

This sewing pattern for the Ruby Lou tote bag and little girls purse, is now available as a PDF pattern complete with PRINTABLE pattern pieces!!!

Here’s a fun purse pattern for little girl that would be fun to sew. When my sister was visiting last summer she said she wished she had a little purse for her 2 year old. One that didn’t snap, or zip or close… since her 2 yr old hands had a hard time with those kinds of things. So the Ruby Lou bag was born… just a simple bag, perfect for toting treasures.

The bag has a tiny pocket on the front…and button details on the handles.

The original tutorial did not include pattern pieces and many readers had a hard time drafting the pattern themselves. For this reason, this pattern has been improved and redesigned.  The PDF pattern features full color photos, clear instructions and printable pattern pieces!

Thank you for the great tutorial. I have a granddaughter with a birthday in January. She will love this bag. turning ten is a step towards feeling older so I will make this a bag she can take to her home school class workshops with all the important items she needs including her IPod. I think I may add another pocket for her pens and extra items she will want to keep tidy….

Would you be able to advise…What is the appropriate age for this size purse?
My grand-daughter is age 6, but she is a small size 5t. Would this cute bag be too big?

No, I don’t think it would be too big. I designed it for my niece who was 3 at the time.
