I returned this week from what I’m sure is the most amazing place I’ve EVER been.
To be honest when I found out we were going to South Africa (as part of a trip with several members of our extended family), I was not sure what to expect.
I purposely did very little research before we left. I didn’t want unrealistic expectations to ruin my experience there.
and I will say it was quite an experience!!!
It was by FAR the friendliest most welcoming place I have ever been. I was completely fascinated by the country, from the landscape to the history and people and the animals.
of course the animals..
Let’s just say that I found out this trip that there is, deep within me, an instinct that says “there is a Lion, go AS FAR AWAY as POSSIBLE… NOW!”…. This previously unbeknown instinct, did not make for pleasant lion viewing on my part.
Hard to enjoy looking at a magnificent creature, when you’re having a panic attack. Let alone remember how to manually set your camera to get a great shot. I was lucky I remembered how to push the shutter button.
Apparently I was the only one that thought that way- and the rest of our group throughly enjoyed viewing the animals in their natural habitat. Go figure, since I was the only one in the group that studied Zoology in college.
All I kept thinking was “have you NOT seen Jurassic Park?????”….. yes those were dinosaurs, and these were lions and leopards.. but as far as my subconscious was concerned it was the same thing.
I’ll share a bit more about our trip with you guys, but promise not too much.. I just need to remember to get my photos off my husbands laptop before he takes it to work tomorrow.

Ok, the most pressing question is…Is there DIET COKE there?

I was lucky enough to get sent there for work for 6 months, it’s such a fabulous place, and yet it previously would have been quite far down my ‘to visit’ list. I did get offered a job there too, but turned it down because for all it was fabulous in the apartments where I was staying, my friends and colleagues were in high security enclaves, and I knew I just couldn’t live like that.

Wow, what a great opportunity to see a really cool place. The pics are great but the one of the leopard in front of the tree is spectacular!!!! I totally get what you were feeling, though. I lived in Alaska and felt the same way about the bears. I mean, I wanted a photo, but still…. YIKES!

South Africa is our family’s favorite place on earth! I’m so glad that you had the opportunity to go. Your photos are great! We spent a lot of time there while living in Moçambique, and before that, my husband did business there back-and-forth for a couple of years. It’s a spectacular and perfectly mesmerizing place!
I enjoyed reading this post. You made me laugh. 🙂
