Zippy Wet Pouch made from a Shower Curtain

**this is a repost of a guest blogging spot I did for 30 days, Funner in the Summer Series** Reposting it here so I have it in my archives**

Hi!!
My name is Melissa Mortenson and I have a blog called the Polkadot Chair! I’m so excited to be sharing this tutorial with you here today on 30 days!! I’ve been a fan of Mique’s since I started blogging and have loved getting to know her a bit better over the last couple of years.

I LOVE Summer!! I love the pool, the sun, vacations, grilling out, swimming and the “schedule less” days with my kids.

It seems like whenever we are on vacation and packing to come home,  or swimming at a neighborhood pool something is always WET when I leave. I have to admit more than a few times the wet things are forgotten about in the bottom of the pool bag and end up mildewing and ruining all the other things around it!

I love to find fabric in “unexpected” places to sew with.  A few years ago, when I was trying to make a baby changing pad in a more economical way, I discovered sewing with shower curtains.

They are cute, come in a variety of colors and styles, frequently go on sale and give you a lot of yardage for your money.  When I found this one a few weeks ago I knew it needed to be made into something.

Sewing with a shower curtain is easy, you just need to remember a couple of things:
-don’t iron anything!! (it will melt, you can lightly steam if you really need to)
-a teflon sewing foot is needed.

For this project you will also need a 16″ zipper.

Cut your shower curtain so that you have 2 pieces 14″x17″ wide.

Pin the right side of your zipper to the right side of the top of your pouch piece.  Sew. Since you are using a teflon foot and not a zipper foot you might need to adjust your needle left/right a bit to get it in the right spot.
Repeat for other pouch piece.
It will look like this when you are done.
Unzip your zipper.

With right sides together, pin and sew around the 3 sides of the bag.

Clip corners & turn right side out.

You’re done! Now all you need to do is remember to take it with you when you go to the pool or the beach!!

I like this idea a ton! I have been hauling the same plastic bag from some book store daily to my daughter’s swimming lessons. Now I can’t wait to find that perfect shower curtain. This is a great idea! Thanks!

I got my shower curtain at the dollar store. It is looking a little thin so I think I’m going to use your dimensions and instructions but I’m going to double it up so that it is a bit thicker.

    Thanks for sharing the tutorial!

I love this idea to use a shower curtain for wet bags! I make them too but always buy the oil cloth or laminated cotton and it costs a ton, much better to hold out for a great sale on super fun shower curtains!
    Thanks so much for sharing!

[...] Over at The Polkadot Chair, I found this cute idea: make a zippy pouch for wet stuff out of a shower curtain! This cool flamingo shower curtain was on sale at Target, but if you don't mind plain, the dollar store has shower curtains, too. Sure, summer is almost over (hello, August!), but wet pouches are useful for lots of other applications. Moms of diaper-wearers, raise your hands! Author Melissa said she likes using shower curtains because they come in cute prints and they offer a lot of yardage at a good price. [how to make a zippy waterproof pouch] [...]
