Today I’m excited to share with you a tutorial to make these DIY Hogwarts House Notebooks as a part of the Happy Harry Potter Series at Rae Gun Ramblings. (I’ve even included a free printable of each of the notebook covers for you).

This is my third year participating in the Happy Harry Potter series. (you can see some of my other Harry Potter Craft Ideas HERE).
Table of Contents
I will have to say, that we are just a tiny bit Harry Potter obsessed at our house. We have the movies on iTunes and I think my 15-year-old daughter watches one almost every day. Nothing to watch on tv?? Just put Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on (that one is our favorite of the movies).
Last year we visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. I’ve mentioned before that I think that place is AMAZING. In addition to all of the great rides and atmosphere, the shopping there is pretty cool too. You can buy house robes, t-shirts, hats, wands, owls and even a sorting hat.
Free Printable Hogwarts Notebook Covers & Harry Potter Craft Idea
While we were perusing some of the shops I spied a set of House Notebooks and thought it was such a clever idea. The perfect thing for a “Muggle” to take with them on the first day of school (so they can imagine that they are really going to Hogwarts instead).
I made a mental note to try to DIY them “someday”. This Harry Potter series seemed like the perfect time to check that project off of my “to make” list.
After I finished the project, my daughter saw these and snatched them up right away. She is planning to take them to school to use as notebooks for her classes.
The notebooks are SO easy to make, all you need to do is cover a composition notebook, you can find them all over the stores right now. Most of the ones I’ve seen are about 50 cents in the back-to-school section.
Are you ready to make one? NOTE: there was a typo in the notebook shown in the photo. The typo has been corrected in the file.

Construction Steps
Begin by printing out your notebook covers on cardstock. You will have a front and a back for each notebook.
Trim off the excess paper from the left side of the printout for the front cover.
Cover the notebook cover with UHU Glue.
Align the trimmed notebook printout with the binding on the composition notebook. Make sure the printout is covering the entire notebook cover.
Smooth it out to secure the glue.
Flip the notebook over and use an x-acto knife to trim off the excess paper, even with the edge of the notebook.
Repeat for the back cover.
That’s it!!

Reading the labels..I have to ask: isn’t it “wizardry” ? Or is that an American English/British English thing?

My boys would love these notebooks. They are starting to read Harry Potter

These are darling. My husband and I went back and forth on buying our kids journals at the Wizarding World. We’ve wanted to get them journaling our adventures and they love Harry Potter stuff. We ended up deciding not to drop that much cash on a notebook so these are perfect!!!
Oh that makes me so happy! I’m glad I could help. Souvenir buying with kids is the worst! Mine can either never make up their minds or they want something at every store. Drives me batty 🙂

Thanks so much! My son was sorted into Hufflepuff and wanted all black & yellow ones. I bought some Hufflepuff yellow cardstock and converted the image to B&W and printed them that way. Needless to say, he was super happy and I’m excited to hear what his friends thought of them when he gets home from the first day of school today (southern hemisphere schedule). I can send you a photo if you would like.

Hi there, I would really like to make these for my daughters 12 birthday in June but the place where you said the link is, is not there. The words are there but there is no link. When I click on the words “download on the templates page” nothing happens. I have tried on both my tablet and on my laptop. Would you be able to help me with this? It would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
Try it again. I made the words bold, to make it easier to see where to click for the downloads

I hope you don’t mind I’m converting them over to jpegs for easier use, I like to print things out via microsoft word so I can ensure a perfect fit for the notebooks!
Steph says
I’m not going to edit them or redistribute them in anyway, I promise. I just want to make sure they fit onto the notebooks properly is all!

I followed all the directions, and went round and round in loops. It didn’t download for me. Cute idea. Too bad it’s not working.

I’m not a creative person, and I’m really excited to come across your post. I’d like to purchase the notebooks, but am wondering if is $1.99 per notebook, or forthe whole set?
No, The cost is for the printable to make them yourself. I don’t sell finished notebooks.

I have subscribed to the newsletter but when I go to the templates page it wont let me on and asks me to confirm my email address which I have done a number of times.
Any help would be appreciated

Hello, Melissa. This is a super cool idea (rather than making fabric covers). I was curious about the label you used on these notebooks. I looked all through your printables, but didn’t see them. Were these also available for our use??? Appreciate all the freebies you provide!!! Thank you.
They aren’t labels, they are part of the printable. So they are already on the paper.
