Quilt Pattern Inspiration

Last summer, I visited Iceland. It was a big family trip with my immediate and extended family members.

My grandmother’s parents are from Iceland (she was born in the US, and her parents were born in Iceland). On a side note, my grandfather’s parents were from Norway, wewere able to visit Norway a few years ago, so it was nice to “complete” the family history visits for that side of the family.

Iceland was a frequent topic of conversation growing up; I heard the family stories, attended local Icelandic festivals, and had frequent family gatherings with many of our cousins on that side of the family, but honestly, I never thought I’d ever get to visit there. It seemed too far away.

Fast-forward to early last year, when a family member was planning a trip and invited us. She had lived in Iceland for a couple of years and knew her way around. We decided it was now or never and decided to join the trip.

Iceland deserves a post of its own (maybe next week?), but I will sum up here to say it was amazing! We were able to visit so many family sites. I saw my great-grandfather’s house and farm near Reykjavik and visited the site of a family home on a small island off the coast of Iceland (which is now under volcanic ash – they did not live there at the time).

Aside from the family connection, I was blown away by the country’s stunning lighting, rocks, water, ice, and everything else. I felt like I was in a Star Wars or Lord of the Rings movie the entire trip. If you’ve considered visiting, DO IT!

As with many of my trips, I created a memento of the experience to take to Iceland.

I spent a few weeks sketching, tossed out many ideas, and finally decided on a simple quilt inspired by the colors of the Icelandic flag. I included Irish Chain blocks, which reminded me of the knitting patterns of Icelandic sweaters, and oversized star blocks to represent the “ice” part of Iceland.

  1. Funny you posted this today. I literally looked this morning for my Icelandic sweater that I purchased in a resale store in Reykjavik several years ago when I visited. It’s a beautiful country and I would LOVE to go back. Your quilt is beautiful.
