New Quilt Finish; A Navy Blue Sailboat Quilt
I’m excited to share another ‘Finish it Friday” quilt project with you! This navy version of my Stripey Sails & Stars quilt pattern might be my favorite project of the summer!

A few years ago, I challenged myself to work through my WIP pile and share some of my finished projects with you in a “Finish it Friday” series.
I’ve got quite a few finished quilt tops that need to be quilted. The pile is beginning to stress me out a bit, so when I started this navy quilt at the beginning of the summer, I was determined to quilt it before it got put in “that” pile!

This quilt was sewn, quilted, and gifted all within a month, which might be a new record for me!
About the Quilt
The quilt pattern is my Stripey Sails and Stars Quilt pattern. I designed and stitched it up last summer with a light blue background and made a navy version this summer.

I was inspired by a beautiful navy sailboat sweater I spotted online to create a version of the quilt with a navy background.

The sweater was out of my budget (and sold out), so I thought a quilt might be the next best thing. As I type this, I’m convinced that this quilt pattern would make a fantastic quilt coat project!

Quilt Details

- Pattern: Stripey Sails & Stars
- Fabric: Background is Sparkler in Navy, boats are Riley Blake Basics. The binding is a 1/4″ stripe in Navy (buy a quilt kit HERE).
- Pantograph: The quilt is quilted on a longarm machine. I used the Kahuna pantograph.
- Backing: Navy Gingham Flannel by Riley Blake Designs (now discontinued)
I always love to back the quilts I gift with minky; however, since this quilt is a summer quilt, I thought that might be a bit too heavy. Instead of minky, I used flannel fabric on the back.
The flannel makes the quilt soft, but does not add as much weight as a minky fabric. We used to have a boat, and I would have loved a flannel-backed quilt for evenings on the boat after a day at the lake!
Quilt Kits
This quilt was our June Polka Dot Project Drop. I pulled out one of the kits to create a quilt for myself, but we still have a few kits left if you’re interested in making a quilt of your own!
You can also pick up a copy of the standalone pattern in our shop!
Video Instructions
If you’d like a bit more help piecing your quilt, you can find video instructions to piece the large sailboat quilt blocks on our YouTube channel.

Where the Quilt Is Now
The quilt has been gifted to a good friend of my daughter. As much as I love how it turned out, I didn’t need another quilt in my sewing room “quilt stack”, and I thought it would be much better to give it to someone who would appreciate it!

Her friend is from New England and grew up close to the lighthouses and seaside towns of the East Coast. She and her family also hosted my daughter for a few weeks over the summer, so a sailboat quilt made for a pretty good hostess gift!
