Summer is upon us and it seems like the garage is ground zero for the mess that comes with kids activities, road tips and summer toys. To help get organized a bit today I’ve rounded up 10 Garage Organization Ideas perfect for summer.
I’m sure you know the feeling, you just got home from a trip to the pool (or the lake or friends house) and you pull in the garage and the kids dump all of your beach towels/pool toys/inflatables/life jackets/ etc on the floor right outside the car. Then the next time you head out to the pool you search frantically through said pile to find the specific pool toy that your kid can’t live without that day. The cycle repeats itself ALL SUMMER.
I’ve been there, I am there. We have a boat that we like to use in the summer. It’s a few hours away and requires a bit of planning to get there. It’s also pretty far from a “big box” store so we have a set list of things we need to take down there each time we go.
The summer always starts out okay. The kids (and us) are pretty good and unpacking when we get back from the lake, but as the weeks wear on there appear “icebergs” of lake ephemera all over the house. By the end of the summer I’m about to swear if I step on one more flip flop or empty bottle of sunscreen.
This year I’ve decided that we need a “summer command center” in our garage. A place to organize all the things we need to take with us on a regular basis. Each thing needs a home and it needs to go back to it’s “home” each time we get back to our house.
We used the Rubbermaid FastTrack system to organize our garden tools on one side of our garage when we moved in. The system has worked so well for us that I decided it would be the perfect thing to create our “summer command center.” The system is based on a “rail” system. You install a rail then hook items you need to the rail. You only drill holes in your wall once and if we ever decide to use it for something else, we can just rearrange the hooks on the rail.
After sketching out an arrangement that I thought would work well for us, I headed to my local Home Depot to pick up the supplies that I needed.
The supplies were easy to find – right on the beginning of the closet/organization aisle and each piece was clearly labeled so you know what it was for.
Now we’ve got a “family work day” planned – (oh how my kids LOVE those days *wink*) to get the garage organized for summer. I can’t wait to share with you how it turns out.
When I was making the plan for our organization project I did a lot of research online. I knew the types of items that I wanted to organize and what the limitations in our garage were. After a few weeks of searching here are some of the best ideas that I found when planning our garage project…

Anything really cool I missed? Just let me know before I get started! What are your best tips for keeping the garage organized in the summer?
Fast, easy, fun. The FastTrack Garage Organization System is easy to install and allows you to store more by making use of your entire wall…not just where the wall studs are located! Visit your local Home Depot today!
