If you’re looking for something cute to sew for Christmas, I think you might like this pattern! The Snowbound Hat Sewing pattern is an easy-to-follow sewing pattern for a quilted, lined, patchwork Santa Claus hat in two sizes.

As soon as I completed my Spellbound Witch Hat pattern, I knew the next thing I wanted to develop was a Santa Claus hat sewing pattern!

Upcycled quilted wearables like quilt coats are very popular now, and I thought that it would be fun to create a quilted patchwork Santa Claus hat inspired by the trend.

You don’t need to find an old quilt to cut up to make this hat (although you absolutely could!). I’ve included two different patchwork options for you to choose from when designing your hat!

About the Sewing Pattern

Suitable for all skill levels, the quilted design provides flexibility with fabric choices, allowing for classic red and white striped or playful patchwork patterns.

Personalize your hat with contrasting faux fur trim. You can add traditional holly and jingle bell embellishments or a sparkly brooch!

Our comprehensive sewing pattern includes detailed instructions to create the hat. The pattern includes:

  • Two different sizes: a Large size suitable for most adults and a Medium size for teens. I am wearing the Large in the photos.
  • Three different quilted hat variations. Plain (not patchwork) fabric, striped patchwork, and square patchwork.
  • Faux fur trim, with tips and tricks for cutting and working with the faux fur.

I’m making extra hats as handcrafted gifts (all my friends are getting one this year; if you know me, pretend you didn’t just read that, LOL!).

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Instructions the Same as the Witch Hat Pattern?

No, they are different. Although I used the witch hat as a jumping-off point for this hat, I had to make significant changes to both the pattern piece and the materials used. Santa hats sit on the head differently than witch hats, so the width of the band on the hat needed to be adjusted.

What is the Size?

Medium: approx 15” tall with 25 1/2” interior circumference
Large: approx 16” tall with 26 1/2” interior circumference
The Large hat should fit most adults. It fits both me and my husband.  It is the size I’m wearing in the photos. The medium fits my daughter, who is quite petite but is snug on her. It would be a good size for teens or older kids. I do not recommend this hat for small children as the pom pom could pose a choking hazard.

Where did you get the Pom Pom?

I ordered mine on Amazon, and I’m very happy with them! You can find them here.

Was the Faux Fur Hard to Sew?

Actually, it wasn’t. I expected sewing to be much more difficult, but it was quite easy. The polar fleece I used for the trim on the pink hat was much harder to work with. The hardest part about sewing with the fur was the mess. I just kept a handheld vacuum close by as I worked.

Can I Use an Old Quilt to Make the Hat?

Yes! I know that upcycling old quilts into wearable items is a bit of a controversial subject, but if you have an old quilt that you can bear to cut up, you can absolutely use that as the base for the hat!

What About Video Instructions?

Yes, there will be a video; I’m still putting the finishing touches on it and hope to have it ready 11/27.

Can I use Other Materials Besides Fur?

I made one sample with polar fleece instead of faux fur. I’m not as happy with the fleece as I was with the fur. But it does work. Remember that since the fleece is not as thick as the faux fur, the hat may fit more loosely. You can also try Minky, Chenille, or pre-quilted flannel.Santa hat on white table
