My Finished American Flag Quilt & New Quilt Pattern
If you’re looking for an American flag quilt pattern with a classic patriotic look and plenty of scrappy charm, you might love the new Red, White and Scrappy Quilt pattern. Featuring patchwork American flag blocks made from a variety of coordinating prints, this quilt is a great way to showcase favorite fabrics while creating a timeless quilt that’s perfect for summer decorating, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, or year-round Americana style.

Last year, I jumped on the American Flag quilt trend and decided to create a quilt of my own by adapting an older flag pillow tutorial from my site. I shared a tutorial for the updated American Flag quilt block pattern and was overwhelmed by requests to turn it into a full quilt pattern.

This year, I’m excited to tell you that not only have I finished my quilt, but I’ve also turned the tutorial into a full quilt pattern, the Red, White & Scrappy Quilt! Keep reading to learn more about the pattern and get the details of my finished quilt.
Don’t worry, the free tutorial is not going anywhere; the pattern is just for those who prefer a full pattern with fabric requirements, extra instructions, etc.

Also, I know that this is a big trend right now, and many others before me have written American flag-inspired quilt patterns. Pat Sloan (I think she was the first), Amy Smart, and many others. This is just my interpretation of the trend, and my pattern differs from the others in construction method and quilt size.
Quilt Pattern Details

This pattern is written to be intentionally scrappy, making it the perfect thing to use up random scraps of fabric from your fabric stash! No need to worry if you have enough yardage of a specific print for your entire quilt. All you need are color-coordinated 2 1/2″ wide scraps!

The strips are 2 1/2″ wide, making it the perfect way to use leftover Jelly Roll or Rolie Polie strips!
The fabrics within each color group are intentionally mixed throughout the quilt. Each block contains a variety of prints from the same color family rather than a single fabric, creating a scrappy, coordinated look.
The blocks are large (finished size 14″ x 20″), which makes this quilt come together quickly! It also makes it very beginner-friendly!

The pattern features 15 sewn blocks arranged in 3 columns of 5 blocks per row.
The quilt pattern is large; it’s definitely on the list of the bigger quilts I’ve ever made at 58″ x 68″; it’s just short of a twin-size quilt (most twin quilts are 65″ x 72″). You could add one large border to the pattern to make it a twin size.
