If you’ve spent any time on social media this summer, you may have noticed that American Flag quilts are having a bit of a “moment”.

I’ve wanted to sew an American Flag quilt for a few years. I’ve even pulled a selection of my red, white, and blue fabrics for the quilt!

We will see if I get it done this summer. I plan to use a modified version of my Flag Quilt Block from my Summer Sparkle pillow pattern to make the quilt (the block measures 14″ x 20″) and add 2 1/2″ sashing. My project will be super scrappy and feature a variety of red, white, and blue fabric prints.

Since the strips on the flag are 2 1/2″ wide, I plan to use leftovers from some of my 2 1/2″ precut rolls for the project. The rectangles of the flags are 6 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, so I’ll be using a selection of leftovers from a 10″ precut stack for that portion.

You can use this as a jumping-off point when creating your flag quilt.

The tutorial included in this post uses 2 1/2″ strips of fabric, making it a great way to use up some fabrics leftover from a 2 1/2″ Jelly Roll (or Rolie Polie).

Note:

A note about the design of this block: out of respect for the actual flag, this block is not meant to be a replica of the American Flag, only somewhat inspired by the flag. It does not feature the correct number of stars and stripes, and that is intentional.
