Sew Red, White & Blue Quilted Pillows with the Summer Sparkler Patterns
Add a touch of handmade Americana style to your home with the new Summer Sparkler Quilted Pillow Patterns. Featuring classic red, white, and blue patchwork designs, these patriotic pillow patterns are perfect for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and summer decorating. Available in two versions, they make a quick and enjoyable sewing project for adding seasonal charm to your home.

Last year, as a part of our Polka Dot Drops series, we released a kit and pattern for a set of coordinated red, white, and blue patriotic pillows. They were such a bit hit that we decided to offer another version (and a new kit) this year!
We’ve also released a standalone pattern from last year’s pillow kit!

We have both a kit and a pattern available for the new version of these pillows, and the best part is that both versions coordinate with each other if you’d like to make a matching set! Both also feature the same fabric and supply requirements.
Why Quilted Pillows Are Perfect for Seasonal Home Decor
I’ve shared quite a few quilted pillow patterns here over the years. One of the reasons I’ve created so many is that they’re an easy way to decorate your home for the holidays.

I try to keep all of my seasonal pillow patterns in standard sizes. I then purchase pillow inserts in those sizes and simply keep the inserts, swapping out the covers seasonally!
A few pillow sizes that I use over and over again are:
- 14″ x 20″
- 18″ x 18″ (my most used size)
- 24″ x 24″
- 14″ (or 16″) x 36″ (this is considered a bench pillow)
Introducing the Summer Sparkler Patriotic Pillow Patterns
We now have not one but TWO Summer Sparkler quilted pillow patterns to pick from in our shop. The original pattern from last year’s kit is available as a standalone pattern, plus an updated yet coordinating version new this year!
Both are great for confident beginners, and both include patterns for the smaller and larger pillow.

The Summer Sparkler Pattern features
- Pattern for a 24″ x 24″ quilted pillow featuring sawtooth stars and star sashing.
- Pattern for a 14″ x 20″ Flag quilted pillow
- Instructions to turn the pieced pillow tops into an envelope back pillow
We also have a discounted pattern bundle available if you’d like both patterns.

The Summer Sparkler TWO pattern features
- Pattern for a 22″ x 22″ quilted pillow featuring sawtooth stars and chain blocks. Even though the pillow is 22″ x 22″, I used the same 24″ x 24″ pillow insert.
- Pattern for a 14″ x 20″ flag quilted pillow.
- Instructions for turning the pieced pillow tops into an envelope-back pillow.

We have a limited number of kits to make the smaller and larger pillows from the Summer Sparkler Two pattern. Kits include pattern, fabric, project bag, and thread snips!
We also have a discounted pattern bundle available if you’d like both patterns.

If you don’t want to make two pillows, you can also turn the larger pillow into a table topper!
Tips for Choosing Fabrics for Patriotic Quilted Pillows

One of my favorite things about these quilted pillow patterns is how versatile they are when it comes to fabric selection. Traditional red, white, and blue prints always create a classic patriotic look, but don’t be afraid to mix in a few unexpected fabrics to make the design your own.

For a timeless Americana feel, look for solid fabrics, small-scale florals, stripes, stars, ginghams, and tone-on-tone prints.
I used fabrics from my Sparkler collection on both sets of pillows. The Summer Sparkler Two pillow features my new Sparkler Star print!

These patterns are also a great way to use fabrics from your stash. Since these patterns are Fat Quarter-friendly, they’re a great way to use up fabric scraps or a few fat quarters you’ve been hanging onto!
Gather a mix of coordinating reds, blues, and neutrals and experiment with different combinations. A navy background (instead of the white I used) will create a more traditional look, while lighter blues and softer reds can give the pillows a fresh summer feel.

No matter which fabrics you choose, aim for a good balance of light, medium, and dark values. The contrast between fabrics helps highlight the patchwork and gives the finished pillow a crisp, polished appearance.
Free Flag Quilt Block Pattern for Quilted Pillows

If you don’t want to purchase a pattern right now but want to make a patriotic pillow, you can use my free American Flag Quilt block pattern to create a pillow top. These blocks are also 14″ x 20″ and will fit in a lumbar-sized pillow form!
Whether you’re decorating for the Fourth of July or simply love classic red, white, and blue dรฉcor, the Summer Sparkler Quilted Pillow Patterns are a fun way to add a handmade touch to your home this season!
The Summer Sparkler patterns are available now in the Polka Dot Chair Shop. You can purchase the new pattern on its own or choose the bundle to receive both coordinating pillow designs. I can’t wait to see how you make them your own with your favorite patriotic fabrics!
