I recently returned from a trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. I love to visit in September or October because I can attend Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween party, and because the weather is generally more agreeable.

Orlando’s weather is unpredictable. We’ve been there in the Fall in cold, hot, and rainy weather. You never really know what clothing you’re going to need until you get there.

In October, it’s normally warm during the day and cool at night. So I thought that creating a sweatshirt for this trip would be fun, as it would help me stay warm in the evenings.

Quilted clothing is trendy right now, and I decided to experiment with the quilt-as-you-go technique to make a simple Disney sweatshirt.

Note: if you’re not a Disney fan, this project would also be perfect for Valentine’s Day; swap out the Mickey Head Shape for a heart.

This tutorial will show you how to create a cozy sweatshirt featuring a beautifully textured Mickey silhouette using the quilt-as-you-go technique.

Even if youโ€™re new to this method, don’t worry! Itโ€™s beginner-friendly and allows you to piece together your fabrics directly on your project.

Combine your favorite fabricsโ€”low-volume prints, bright Disney-themed designs, or scraps from past quilting projectsโ€”to create an item that is uniquely you!

Best of all, youโ€™ll have a wearable souvenir thatโ€™s as functional for exploring the parks.

Step Three: Quilting

  • If desired, stitch a line of machine quilting at the fold of each of the strips. You do not need to add extra quilting detail, as the piece is already quilted. I wanted the extra texture, so I added additional quilting lines.

  • Rotate the piece 90 degrees and mark lines 1โ€ apart.
  • Quilt along the marked lines.

Step Four: Wash

  • To get that โ€œupcycled quiltโ€ look, wash and dry both the sweatshirt and the quilted piece.

Step Five:

  • Cut out the Mickey Head shape from the paper.
