I’ve always been a fan of what I call “real clothes” costumes. These costumes can be created with items you already have in your closet or things that can be easily found at a thrift shop.

I like to take those items and then add a few unique accessories (some of which are simple craft projects) to create a cute and easy Disney Halloween costume!

Our family has attended Midkeys Not So Scary Halloween Party for many years, and dreaming up the costumes has always been part of the fun for me.

Many of you have asked me to compile a list of our MNSSHP costumes throughout the years. Today, I’m excited to share the list with you.

Easy DIY Disney Halloween Costume Ideas

Most of these costumes are ones that have been worn by myself or my family in recent years. Since most of these costumes are “real clothes” costumes, they are great to wear to the Halloween party since they are not cumbersome to wear around the park.

One: Cinderella & Mice Costumes

Transform into the elegant Cinderella with a simple blue dress, black velvet choker, sneakers, and a tiara. You’ll feel like royalty all night long.

Cinderella DIY Costume Sewing Mouse

The Cinderella Mouse costume (Perla & Suzy in the movie) is easily created with a simple blue shirt dress, a purchased apron, and a handkerchief tied in your hair. Use black eyeliner to draw a nose and whiskers on your face to make it more authentic.

DIY Ariel Halloween Costume

Two: Ariel Costume

My daughter wanted to be Ariel “on the land” for Halloween one year. We accomplished this by DIY’ing her Ariel costume with a blue skirt, white shirt, red wig, and even Flounder.

Three: Pizza Planet Costume

My son grew up on Toy Story, and it’s always been a family favorite (he’s even named Andrew). You can’t get more simple than a Pizza Planet Delivery driver costume. This one is also great for older kids and teens. Full Pizza Planet costume details can be found on our site.

Four: Toy Story Alien Costume

My husband is always up for an adventure. His Toy Story Alien costume was created with a blue t-shirt, Cricut machine & hat. We have a full tutorial and free Cricut SVG files to create this Toy Story costume on our site.

Five: Sid from Toy Story Costume

This one is so easy! You can find a free Toy Story SVG file to create the black and white t-shirt on my site. Wear the black tee and get a Woody Toy Story character. Stick it in your back pocket or carry it haphazardly, and you have a costume!

Six: Rapunzel & Flynn Ryder Costumes

This costume was created entirely with thrifted clothing items. To create Flynn Ryders jacket, cut the sleeves off a button-down shirt and pair it with a white shirt and khaki joggers.

For Rapunzel, any lavender dress will do! For a bit of extra fun, add a Pascal to your shoulder.

Seven: Jungle Cruise Characters

Whether you’re pulling inspiration from the original ride at Disneyland or the movie, there are a lot of fun characters to pick from for a costume. The best part is that it’s pretty easy to find simple khaki pants, shirts & shorts at most stores.

woman dressed up as lilly houghton from jungle cruise movie

The Lilly Houghton (the main character in the movie) costume is made with a navy shirt, khaki pleated pants, and a simple neckerchief. The straw hat was purchased at Walmart.

If you’ve been on the ride, then you know of Dr. Albert Falls. He’s a legendary member of the S.E.A. club, for which the ride was based.

All you need is a khaki shirt, shorts & hat for this costume. For an “extra” touch, I embroidered “Dr. Albert Falls” on the costume shirt. If you don’t have an embroidery machine, you can easily add text with a Cricut machine & iron on vinyl.

Eight: Mouseketeers Costumes

“M – I – C – see you real soon!” I’m sure we all know how that song ends! These Mousketeer costumes were created with purchased red and white baseball tees, Mickey Mouse hats (which can be purchased in the parks), and a Cricut machine.

All you need to do is cut your name out with iron-on vinyl and add it to your shirts! Pair the tees with sneakers and rolled-up jeans for a vintage vibe!

Nine: White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland Costume

This Alice in Wonderland costume is created by layering a plain white dress with a bright red cardigan, and I have to say that I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

To add a bit of whimsy, we bought some red and white striped tights, and I made a custom “clock purse” for her (sewing pattern for the purse).

Ten: Cheshire Cat Costume

Layer a striped sweater over pink jeans to DIY a Cheshire Cat costume, then add cat ears.

Eleven: Mad Hatter Costume

To create a Mad Hatter Costume, pull a few of the craziest items in your closet and layer them all together (or find some at a thrift shop). I think that’s the benefit of a Mad Hatter costume: you can really use whatever you have and make sure it’s somewhat mismatched.

Add a Mad Hatter Hat & bow tie to complete the look.

Twelve: Playing Card Costume

Finding a costume for a teenage boy is NOT easy. This Ace of Spades t-shirt was just about as much of a costume as my son would go for, and that was just fine with me. I used my Cricut machine and some black iron-on vinyl to create the card image on the front. He then just wore a black ski cap on his head to complete the look.

Thirteen: Mr. & Mrs. Banks from Mary Poppins

My husband and I went as Mr. & Mrs. Banks to the Halloween party a few years ago, and it’s now one of my all-time favorite costumes. While it can be hard to find a vintage blue coat like the one Mrs. Banks wears in the movie, any “old-fashioned” looking dress or coat will do when paired with a hat and sash.

My skirt, hat & sash were purchased on Amazon.

My husband wore one of his tweed jackets with a skinny tie and added a poppy to the lapel.

two teens in skeleton costumes

Fourteen: Skeleton

While not technically a Disney character, I love the old cartoon short of “Spooky Scary Skeletons.” This skeleton costume is a hit with teens! All you need are some black sweats and a Cricut machine. We’ve even provided you a free Skeleton SVG file so you can create your own costume!

Fifteen: Genovia Citizen

This costume is very subtle and a bit of a family inside joke! A few years ago, we created a set of “Genovia Athletic Teams” t-shirts for my daughter to wear to the Disney parks! They were a big hit and would be a cute but very subtle Disney Halloween costume!

Sixteen: Haunted Mansion Characters

I love the Haunted Mansion! My kids always tease me, but it’s one of my all-time favorite rides. It’s just spooky enough to be interesting but not gory or scary. A simple Haunted Mansion costume can be created with a green & black striped apron (mine is purchased), but you can sew one yourself with our free tutorial.

The costume finishes with a black dress, white shirt, and lace headband.

The groundskeeper costume can be created with a tweed jacket, a hat, a scarf, and a lantern. Bonus points if you’ve got a dog to go with it, too!!

These Disney Halloween costume ideas are easy to put together and perfect for fans of all ages. Pick your favorite character, gather your costume pieces, and get ready for a spooktacular night of Disney-inspired fun!
