I’m excited to share a quilt block center pattern as part of the Riley Blake “From Our House” Quilt Along.

The From Our House Quilt is created from 18″ Log Cabin Quilt blocks, each with a unique 6″ block in the center. It was designed to celebrate the release of the Hush 4 Fabric collection.

Many of the Riley Blake Designers (myself included) share an additional 6″ quilt blocks to put in the center of your larger 18″ quilt block!

The idea is that you will have many different designs and options to make your quilt entirely unique! You will need 14 blocks to complete the quilt, but the center designs can mix original pattern options, designer pattern options, and even your creations!

About the Mini Santa Hat Quilt Block

Since we are so close to Christmas, I thought it would be fun to share a free pattern for a Santa Hat Quilt block.

Since this block features some smaller pieces and unique angles, I decided it would be easiest to create using Foundation Paper Piecing.

My block is created using Sparkler fabrics in Red, & Riley Green along with one of the prints from Hush 4. I added additional Sparkler Fabric strips to the Santa Hat center to create my Log Cabin Quilt block.

What is Foundation Paper Piecing?

Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) is a quilting technique that involves sewing fabric pieces onto a paper foundation following a printed pattern. This method is especially popular for creating precise, intricate designs that would be challenging to achieve using traditional piecing methods or for quilt blocks that feature angles other than 45 or 90 degrees.

This little Santa Hat is the perfect little FPP project; it’s great for beginners!

What Can I Make with the Santa Hat Quilt Block?

The options are endless! When finished, the block is 6″ x 6″, so if you want to make a quilt with the blocks, I recommend a layout with alternating 6″ quilt blocks and blank 6″ squares.

If you make the Log Cabin quilt block as I did, you can turn it into a quilted pillow for an 18″ pillow form.

You can also quilt it, cut it out, and make it into a Christmas sweatshirt using a similar technique to the one I used on my Disney Quilted sweatshirt.
