There’s something inherently comforting about sipping a warm beverage, especially when it comes in a mug placed on a charming quilted mug rug. These small fabric coasters protect your surfaces and add a touch of handmade warmth to your daily rituals. One of the best things is that making quilted mug rugs is an accessible project for both beginners and seasoned quilters.

In this article, I’ll share some of my favorite Mug Rug patterns and some of my best tips for creating and designing a mug rug!

What is a Mug Rug?

A mug rug is a small piece of fabric, often quilted, designed to serve as a coaster for a mug or cup. It’s larger than a typical coaster but smaller than a placemat, providing a designated and decorative space for your mug and a spot for a small snack or treat.

Mug rugs are not only functional, protecting surfaces from heat and condensation, but they also offer an opportunity to express your creativity through your fabric choices, designs, and quilting techniques. They are popular for adding a cozy, personalized touch to coffee or tea breaks and are charming handmade gifts.

Materials Needed

Materials:

  1. Fabric: Choose cotton fabric for both the top and backing. You can mix and match colors and patterns to create a visually appealing design. This is a small project; you can also experiment with nontraditional quilting fabrics.
  2. Batting: Use thin batting to provide some insulation to the mug rug; I prefer 100% cotton.
  3. Thread: Select a thread that complements the fabric colors.
  4. Quilting Ruler and Rotary Cutter: These tools will help you cut precise and straight pieces of fabric.
  5. Sewing Machine: While you can hand-sew, a sewing machine will make the process faster and more efficient.

Tips for Creating a Mug Rug

  1. Experiment with different fabric combinations to create unique designs. As mentioned above, it’s a great way to test out fabrics you might not normally quilt with.
  2. Raid your scrap bin! Mug rugs are perfect projects for using up some of your favorite fabric scraps!
  3. Practice your quilting technique on scrap fabric before working on the final mug rug.
  4. Take your time with the binding to ensure a clean finish. Since these projects are smaller, you may notice the binding details more than on a larger quilted project.
