The Polka Dot Chair site is now over 16 years old! Can you believe that? How many of you have been here since the beginning? Those early years were rough, with lots of typos. Sometimes, I look back and wonder what I was thinking when I wrote the blog posts, but I’m glad I was brave enough to start something new!

With over 16 years of tutorials and articles on the site, I think it’s essential at times to review and catalog some of the projects.

We have quite an extensive collection of Quilt Block patterns on our site. Most of the patterns are free; a few of them are for purchase. You can find all of them on our quilt block pattern archive pages.

As much as I love the archive, I wanted to narrow down the content there a bit more for you guys, and today I’ve rounded up all of our free patterns for twelve-inch finished quilt blocks.

Reminder!

A twelve-inch quilt block is 12″ x 12″ AFTER it is sewn into the quilt. Which means that when you’re finished sewing the block, it will be 12 1/2″ x 12 1/2″. The extra 1/2″ on each side allows for a 1/4″ seam allowance on each side, so that when the block is sewn into the quilt, it’s 12″ x 12″!

If you’re looking for a 12″ block for a specific project (like a sampler quilt), I hope that you’ll find one of these free patterns helpful.

I’m not done adding to our site. As I add additional free quilt block patterns, I’ll be sure to keep this list updated.

What Can I Make with an Individual Quilt Block?

If you’re new to quilting, you may wonder what to do with all of these patterns. There are so many options! If you want to make one quilt block, be sure to check out our suggested projects for leftover quilt blocks.

If you would like to make a quilt top, sewing blocks all the same size makes it so easy! Just sew your finished blocks together in a simple grid pattern.

Wondering about the size? It’s just simple math! Four twelve-inch quilt blocks across gives you a quilt 48″ wide (4*12 = 48). Six quilt blocks down gives you a quilt 72″ long (6 *12 = 72). Working this way makes it so easy to design a quilt top that’s unique and just the size you want!

Printable Patterns

Most of the patterns on this list have a print button at the bottom of the post (much like you’d see on a recipe). However, since we’ve been around for a long time, not all of them are in that format. We’ve been working hard to update the older tutorials for consistency, but haven’t finished all of them yet.
